Overview
As the name implies, CRI was set up to function as a research institute for the CSK group, whose primary holding was
Sega. Apart from doing research into new media and formats and developing support tools for the software industry (mainly Sega and its third parties), it did also do some games development itself. When Sega was splitting of its divisions into separate companies, CRI merged with the
AM2 division.
Since then, the company has been regrouped into CRI Middleware, focusing on what is the core business of the company, namely supplying the industry with tools for audio, video and 3-D.
