Historical Events

    1983:

    • CSK Research Institute is founded as a laboratory for CSK, specialising in artificial intelligence research.

    1988:

    • After developing an expert system development tool, multimedia is established as a second research object.

    1989:

    • CRI develops Japan's first CD-ROM software: After Burner for the Fujitsu FM-Towns system.

    1993:

    • Using its skills gained in CD-ROM technology, the institute takes part in the development of the Sega Saturn. CRI develops the Saturn's BIOS file system, development tools and supplies technical support for the system.

    1996:

    • CRI MPEG Sofdec (a software MPEG decoder) and CRI ADX (an audio compression tool) are developed.

    1997:

    • CRI takes part in the development of the basic software for the Sega Dreamcast. Research in network games is initiated.

    1998:

    • Dreamcast versions of CRI MPEG Sofdec and CRI ADX are completed. The compression routines are used in all debut titles of the platform.

    Sep 30, 1999:

    • On September 30, 1999, CSK sold its 100% interest in CSK Research Institute Corp. to Isao Okawa for ¥778 million. The sales price was based on an appraisal performed by a third party.

    2000:

    • During the split-up of Sega, CRI merges with Sega's AM2 research division. As part of the deal, the merged company gains the rights to Sega's Shenmue series.

    2001:

    • The company turns to multi-platform development.
    • When the game developers move to SEGA-AM2 Co., Ltd., the company is rebranded as the middleware developer CRI Middleware Co., Ltd.

    Aug 01, 2001:

    • Company changes name to SEGA-AM2 Co., Ltd. in order to express the merger between Sega's old AM2 division and CSK Research Institute.
