The Game Designers Studio

Overview

The Game Designers Studio is a subsidiary company of Square Enix Co., Ltd., created because Square had an exclusive deal with Sony. To produce a game for Nintendo's GameCube, they founded this studio with a 49% share owned by Square Enix and the remaining stock (with a marginal majority) owned by Akitoshi Kawazu, thereby escaping the Sony deal without legal issues and taking advantage of Nintendo's Q fund for "new" game developers. Since GDS functions only as a front-end, actual games development is handled by Square's 2nd development division.

The company has since been turned into a consolidated subsidiary of Square Enix, changing its name into SQEX. Upon Square Enix's merger with Taito, the actual merger was performed between this subsidiary and Taito. SQEX once more changed its name, this time to Taito Corporation, taking over all of the old Taito Corporation's business.
