OverviewOrigin Systems was founded by Richard Garriott in 1983, after disputes with publisher Sierra On-Line over the publishing of Ultima II. He then decided that he wanted to create his own company that would publish his games.
The company has become well known for their Ultima, Wing Commander, and Privateer game franchises. Acquired by Electronic Arts in 1992, Origin began working on internet-only software, with the Ultima Online series becoming one of the most popular massively-multiplayer online role-playing (MMORPG) series of all time.
Richard Garriott left the company after Electronic Arts cancelled one of his development projects in the year 2000.
