Philip Mitchell joined Beam Software in 1982 where he was one of their first employees. Mitchell had previously studied computer programming at the University of Melbourne.
Philip Mitchell wrote the The Tolkien Software Adventure series at Beam Software Pty., Ltd. in the eighties. These include the titles The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Shadows of Mordor and The Crack of Doom.
Mitchell is known for the parser he created for The Hobbit which was called Inglish. It allowed for complex commands to be entered and conversations with other characters in the game world.
Mitchell worked for Beam until circa 2000, by which time it had been renamed Melbourne House studios.
