On 13th February 2012 John Watson announced to have co-founded the development studio Stoic. The team is currently working on its first game The Banner Saga, where Watson is responsible for the programming. Previously he was with BioWare where he worked as Lead Combat Programmer on Star Wars: The Old Republic.

John entered the game industry in 2000 as a Programmer for Sony Online Entertainment, in the early development stages of Star Wars Galaxies. He continued as a Senior Programmer on Star Wars Galaxies: Jump To Lightspeed. He served as Lead Programmer on the next two expansions Rage of the Wookiees, and Trials of Obi-Wan. John also served as Lead Client Programmer on DC Universe Online.

Prior to working with Sony Online Entertainment, he worked as a Senior Systems Software Engineer at Space Telescope Science Institute, the scientific organization which operates the Hubble Space Telescope.

John majored in both Physics and Mathematics at Mississippi State University, and spent his 'free' time operating TempusMUD, playing games, and developing software such as the Linux based Quake level editor Ice with Charles Beyer.

He got his start programming games in the early 1980s on his Apple IIe, modifying games such as EAMON and Wizardry.
