Daryl F. GatesDeveloper BIO
Daryl Francis Gates entered the Los Angeles Police Department over half a century ago, in 1949, working among others on the Manson Family and the Hillside Stranglers murders, and he made to the very top, becoming the LAPD Chief in 1978. He went in the footsteps of his mentor, ex-chief William Parker, creating the famous special police unit SWAT in 1965, and developing the successful anti-drug program D.A.R.E.
After the infamous LA riots, with 43 years of service with the LAPD, and 13 years as its chief, Daryl Gates was forced to resign - and only after heavy clashes with the LA Mayor Bradley (Could the figure of corrupt and arrogant Mayor Preston in "SWAT 2" be a not-so-subtle allusion to this incident?).
After that, the Chief wrote an autobiography (entitled "Chief") and got involved with Sierra On-Line, creating "Police Quest 4: Open Season" and then the "SWAT" simulation/strategy series, paying close attention to maximum reality already since PQ4. Currently he runs his own investigative company (named - make a guess! - "CHIEF").
Chief Gates makes a cameo in "Police Quest 4". Take the elevator in Parker Center and look for him on higher floors of the building! (The Shortstop "police" bar, featured in the game, is a real place which had made Gates angry during his career, as many police officers would, for various reasons, get intro fights and other kinds of trouble while frequenting it)
The Chief also appears in "SWAT 2", with a number of helpful in-game hints.
