John Dee Stanley

Developer BIO

John had this editorial comment to say on Usenet in 1995, in response to a post about asking artists to work for free:

In the last 10 years I've written several shareware games (Megatron VGA, Gambit Modem Chess, Dungeon Quest and Deadly Game Of Maze) that required the help of outside artists. I felt I had a great idea and all I had to do was make it work and I'd hit the big time. Well it's true, writing those shareware games gave me the experience I needed to land a good paying job writing games professionally. It took years of self study to learn my trade. But I never asked anyone to work with me for free. Along the way several people offered to assist me with art and music and I always managed to pay them for their time. Paying for services rendered is part of being professional. Usually you don't have to pay a lot to get help but it is very unprofessional to expect talented people to work for free just because you feel you have a great idea. My feeling on this subject are simple, "If you aren't willing to invest real money in your ideas then your ideas aren't very good to begin with."
