Born in Rocky Mountain, Virginia, and raised in Buffalo, New York, Jesse L. Martin returns for his sixth season as the compulsive and passionate Detective Ed Green on TV’s longest-running drama series "Law and Order."
Martin received critical acclaim for his recurring role on “Ally McBeal” as Ally's boyfriend, Dr. Greg Butters. He also had a memorable guest-starring role as a disenfranchised alien on “The X-Files,” in an episode written and directed by series star
David Duchovny.
A New York University graduate and classically trained stage actor, Martin is thrilled to be living and working in New York City where he was an original cast member of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning Broadway musical “Rent.” His extensive New York theater credits run the gamut from Shakespeare to musical comedy. He recently starred as Mack the Knife at Williamstown in “Threepenny Opera” opposite Betty Buckley, Melissa Erico and Randy Graff. In addition to acting on stage, Martin also produced the one-man off-Broadway show “Fully Committed.”
Martin’s additional television credits include a regular role in the series “413 Hope Street” and a guest-starring dual role in “New York Undercover.” He also appeared in the TV movie “Deep in My Heart” (co-starring with Anne Bancroft and Gloria Reuben) and in the ensemble cast of the independent feature film “The Restaurant,” performing alongside Adrien Brody, Elise Neal and singing sensation Lauryn Hill. He also performed in the cable special “Rocky Horror 25: Anniversary Special,” singing songs from the cult classic film.
In his free time, Martin loves watching sports and is a huge basketball fan. Martin resides in New York City. His birthday is January 18.
