Ken CarpenterDeveloper BIO
Ken is a software engineer who has specialized in embedded systems development and game development. In particular, he is a specialist in network protocols and server development.
As the Technical Lead for Helikon Technologies, Ken was responsible for the development of a massively multiplayer space strategy game with the working title of "Cosm". This game was to be a ground-breaking MMO title that allowed 100,000+ users to play in the same virtual world. Users could create large empires of planetary and space-based facilities, as well as completely customizable ships. Further, the gameplay continued 24x7 whether a player was online or not. For this to work, Cosm employed a sophisticated system of AI orders for all units to follow.
Unfortunately, due to lack of funds, Helikon was forced to close its doors in 2003 before the project was launched.
Recently Ken worked for a year and a half as a Senior SE at
Electronic Arts helping lead the effort to create a completely new server infrastructure for EA's 2009 titles and beyond. This project is still underway, although Ken has left EA for greener pastures and less working hours.
Ken made contributions to the online server features of the following EA titles (although EA's very unfair crediting scheme does not reflect this in the games' official credits):
- NCAA 2008
- Tiger Woods 2008
- Madden 2009
- FIFA 2009
- NBA Live 2009
- NASCAR 2009
- Pretty much every online title that uses the EA Lobby system from 2009 and beyond
