Developer Biography

Torrie Dorrell was Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing for Sony Online Entertainment from 2004-2009, and was responsible for managing the company’s global Marketing, Sales, Customer Insights, Web Development, Public Relations and Community departments, as well as helping to establish the long-term strategic direction for the company’s efforts to reach new audiences with such games as Free Realms and DC Comics Universe Online.

Dorrell is a seasoned entertainment industry executive with a wide range of experience across multiple mediums.

She began her entertainment career in the music industry, where she created family record imprints for Disney, Warner Bros. and Rhino Entertainment. She moved into film and television to create the Licensing & Merchandising division for PolyGram Filmed Entertainment, and the Music Merchandising division for Universal Studios. Prior to joining SOE, Dorrell was General Manager of Black Label Games and VP of Marketing at Vivendi Universal Games.

Dorrell holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Pepperdine University and started her working career as an editor and writer for various magazines and newspapers before moving into the entertainment industry.

Dorrell is an advisor to several game publishers, is a member of the Research Advisory Council for Aberdeen Group, and sits on the International Game Developers Association’s Women in Games Advisory Board. While at Sony, she also created G.I.R.L. (Gamers in Real Life), which seeks to educate and recruit more women into the video game industry. Dorrell was was voted as one of the Game Industry’s 100 Most Influential Women in 2006 (next-gen.com); Top 5 Women in Technology in 2009 (chipchix.com); and Top 10 Most Influential Women in MMOs 2009 (Massive Online Gamer magazine).
