I know it's a part of DirectX, but there are a few games that have their multiplayer designed exclusively for the DirectPlay API and lobby system, which was deprecated a very long time ago. Most of them were also tied with the defunct MSN Gaming Zone. Despite being a DirectX feature, it's not something that's synonymous as just using DirectX since it doesn't rely on their graphics API.
