coenak (3565), Jan 08, 2009
User AvatarZiff Davis Media has confirmed the selling of 1UP.com, Mycheats.com, Gametab.com, and GameVideos.com to Hearst's UGO Entertainment. With this transaction, Ziff Davis Media's Electronic Gaming Monthly Magazine will be closed down. EGM began with its first issue in 1989 with its last issue being January 2009.

User AvatarGreat. So my subscription to EGM, which had been a subscription to Games for Windows, which prior to that was a subscription to Computer Gaming World, is now a subscription to nothing at all?

Oh well, I guess had too much junk in the mailbox anyway.
User Avatarha! i'm in the same boat as you :)

:) Same here, both at home and at the library!
User AvatarLast month I was going back and forth on what to subscribe to between EGM and Game Informer and I finally went with Game Informer and now I am sure glad I did!
User AvatarThe sad thing is I loved the direction Computer Gaming World was going. Less reviews/previews and more thoughtful articles... I think there's definitely a need for a print publication like that and am sad to see them all slowly disappear.

Computer Games Magazine (which was the old Strategy Plus) was the best print mag for PC games, IMO...so naturally it died. :(

There was some talk of a revival. Anybody heard anything lately?
User AvatarSo what exactly are the old grey ladies of our hobby's print mags now?

PCGamer, GamePro, and Game Informer are the only ones I remember going back to the 1990s that I see on newstands nowadays.

Nintendo Power is still around too.

But that's less of a magazine and more of a shameless promotional pamphlet that gets sent to you every month for a yearly fee. :P
User AvatarYep, same here. And the worst part is I saw this closure coming for the last 6 months or so (lots of signs were there), and I still resubscribed when the renewal notice came in November.
User AvatarI don't think "closes" is the right word.

More like slaughtered. Murdered. Killed.

I hope UGO goes bankrupt.
User AvatarHow is it UGO's fault? As the source will tell you, it was Ziff's decision to shut EGM down. They either did not offer it to UGO at all, or UGO did not want to buy it, but they were not the ones deciding to stop publication.

Precisely. Neither of both involved parties wants to burn money in these days; EGM was part of the whole 1UP network--but only its online division was sold to Hearst.

They could've kept the online portion going - the podasts, etc. I've seen lots of posts on various forums lamenting that ALL OF THAT is being axed.

I understand the magazine being shut down. But the online portion? That made no sense.
User AvatarPity. I liked (although I didn't subscribe to) EGM.
Man, its a shame, EGM got be started on video games, hate to see it go. *ten gun salute*
