View Mode: threaded | watch thread This year marks the twentieth anniversary of Nintendo's Game Boy ! Launched in Japan in 1988, and 1989 everywhere else at $179 dollars, it quickly managed to overtake Atari (Lynx.), Sega (Game Gear, Nomad.), and NEC (Turbo Express.) dominating the handheld market until 1998. It gave gamers better, longer games on the go, with more battery life than any of the competition. Throughout the years Game Boy got color casings, a bigger screen, and more portable. It was finally succeeded by Game Boy Color in 1998. The Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advanced kept the original Game Boy legacy alive with backwards compatibility. Although the Game Boy's future is in question, it will always be remembered for kick starting the handheld market as we know it today. Happy anniversary Game Boy !
DANIEL HAWKS talking about the GB, strange..., :PCongratulations!, I guess. Holy crap I feel old, I still have my original Game Boy, one of the very first originals. Just a shame that the Game Boy line has been cut off with the DS, but oh well. Happy anniversary Game Boy.

May I propose that old age be officially recognized as an MG taboo? :) That and actually not having a life. :p ![]() Big John WV Wrote:

It gets worse: the DSi will be cutting off the GBA, which is a major stab at anyone who wants to complete a pokedex. ![]() Big John WV Wrote:

Same here, I still have two original grey Game Boy's with the original packaging and advertising from the Swedish Nintendo Club and Bergsala AB (the official scandinavian Nintendo distrubitor). Think of all the AA batteries that have gone to heaven in that 20 years...

Yeah, there was a lot, but not as much as those damn Game Gears sucked up those damn gluttons. I had four batteries last in my Game Boy for 3 months than six went in 1 1/2 hours with those damn things. Thank god for the invention of the power adapters. I'm happy that I have an original GBA as I can take it on camping trips and the like without worrying about powah issues. Not to mention other construction-related drawbacks of built-in rechargeables. I've still have my GB and I remember the time when I needed to wait until my AA batteries were charged.
And to the many later incarnations of the classic GB, too.
All the way up to the DS. |
