The console formerly known as 'Revolution' is now called Wii ( pronounced We) I am always completely perplexed by Nintendo. I didn't get the DS and I definitely do not get Wii. Whatever. People love em. People play em. Heck even I like the DS. Go Wii!!!
User AvatarWiiTF are they thinking?
User AvatarWii sounds great to me. I'm still sad that the Nintendo Dolphin (GameCube) and Sega Guppy (Dreamcast) never saw the light of day. Leave it to the Japanese to come up with awesome names!
User AvatarMuch better than "Revolution", it sounds cute.
User AvatarBut the Revoltuion is supposed to be a "revolution"! Thats what the name was implying. This system was supposed to revolutionize and change the face of gaming as we know it.

Oh, whatever, I guess I'll still be buying it.

Wii doesn't sound that bad either.
User AvatarIf Nintendo is trying to end their "kiddy image", congrats. Back to step 1, old chaps. And oh...

[geek stand up block start] If they called it "wii". Does this mean the attachment will be called "loo"? And I suppose the third party games will be cataloged under the "poo" section? And if I want to show mine to my friends, will they think I'm a perv? Allright, I'll stop taking the piss. Or the Wiiss. [end geek stand up]

I'd fire their marketing department.WITH JUST CAUSE.
User AvatarLol!

Man, I really don't want to hook up something called "Wiiii" to my tv. Guess what Ninendo? I'll pass. Again.
User AvatarJust more proof that truth is stranger then fiction. Wii... They make the jokes that could be made so easy.

I'm personally waiting for someone to sit the revolution in front of a french flag. lol.
User AvatarThis smells like a desperate attempt to get some media attention for what will be, almost inevitably, the third place console of the new generation. Sega killed itself with all of its gimmicky names and games, and now it looks like Nintendo is going the same route...
User AvatarBut the asian market will lap it up.
User AvatarHey not all things are bad considering.

The Wii supports duality. Now you can hook up for Wii's and play with eachothers Wii's over the internet. Wit the new remote, you can Wii from all the way across the room. Plus, the your Wii will come with a vibrating function. Because of the new remote, you can even play with your Wii one handed! But why stop there. You can play with your Wii alone or with a friend! Nintendo's Wii is much smaller than Sony or Microsofts, so now we can fit it into smaller places. Hopefully Nintendo's Wii is also much quieter than other people's, too. Mario and Link and the rest of the gang are going to be on Nintendo's Wii as well. So in the long run I think we can rely on Nintendo's Wii to deliver the pleasure and thrill that gamers want.

OKAY, Wiiiiiiit the f**k were they thinking?

Now that I've done the Nintendo bashing I think its time to clean up my act.

I can see why they wanted to do this.

American computer geeks and many others should know that Apple is a leading company maker. They aren't used much by gamers, but excel at work and creative production, especially with Phtotoshop etc. But for some reason, Steve Jobs chose not to include a floppy drive on his new computers? Why? Because they RUN the computer industry from a shadowy throne.

From the beginning, Apple has been on the forefront of technology with computers. Bill Gates never actually developed the first computer. In fact, he pretty much stole it. Or stole major parts of it. Everything that Steve does is pretty much followed up by Bill Gates. Ok, so when Apple removed the floppy srives from the computers, do you know what Microsoft did? Months later computers no longer came with floppy drives for PCs.

Nintendo is the same way. In truth, Nintendo is original grandaddy of all the ideas that are used in modern games. Look at it. L + R buttons. Nintendo had it on the SNES first. Now its a standard. PS2 has two of them. The N64 had the rumble pack FIRST. Now Sony and Microsoft build them into their controllers. Nintendo had the DS. Months later the PSP comes out. And Microsoft is following with the Origami. Whatever the industry's done, Nintendo most likely launched it. If you don't beleive me, just look at the facts.

This is what Nintendo has realized. They're just like Apple. Everyone ignores them while they sit on all the technology. Sony and Microsoft just copy them a year later. So Nintendo has realised why try and compete with them. They're saying screw them, because in the end they know that they'll just try and conform to Nintendo anyway. Its always been done. They've done it in the past, they're doing it now. I can asure you that in 6 more years Sony and Microsfot will be borrowing ideas from Nintendo. I don't know if it'll be the controller. But it will be WiFi. Free WiFi that is. Sony doesn't have it, and Microsfot you need to pay for it. WiFi is the new internet. No fees at all. Wireless systems. Meanwhile the 360 is still corded up to the internet wall jack. I'll be laughing the day they try to copy the Nintendo's controller.

Sony and Microsoft may be laughing now, but he who laughs last laughs best. Months from now Mr. Iwata will be sitting and cackling on his shadowy throne. Nintendo is video game's Apple. Everyone takes them for granted, not knowing that they are the ones moving forward. If Sony and Microsoft were the only competing companies, everyone next-gen launch all we'd have is a bigger box with etter graphics, no momentum at all.

The Wii is a crappy name but don't laugh at Nintendo. They aren't stupid. They learn from the past and know what they are doing.

It's still a stupid name though. :-P

And now I really can be French.

Viva la WiiWii!!!!
User AvatarI don't think its that bad name and besides if thats what its gonna be we might as well accept it. Its also getting a hell of a lot more attention than anything els which is just free publicity. I can't wait to get my hands on one of the new Nintendos.
User AvatarJust to make a point, the 360 isn't wired to the internet wall jack. That's optional, if you can't afford the wireless adaptor :p Speaking of, bought that today. Easy as plugging in via usb and it detected my wireless router within seconds.

User Avatarwho cares about the name? I mean, really? Is xbox 360 any better? Good on sony for being so unique in naming there's by numer. wow!

Seriously, I don't care. If what I've seen of some early tests on this console are anything to go by, it'll be a blast. I can't, however, say it will either beat the PS3 or 360, nor be third in line. Why? Because, in my mind, just like the DS, it goes hand-in-hand with them, bringing a unique and fresh perspective on the industry. Play the usual games on the usual systems and have one of these little tykes sitting right along side. If the DS has proven anything, it's that Nintendo haven't lost it just yet, and I doubt they will for a while to come, Wii or no Wii ;)
User AvatarOh, what a cute name.... to say the least. Wii sounds like weepy, or perhaps wimpy..... i guess that's how nintendo plans to face the competition, or to put it blunty, to face their own doom. Wii???? What the heck is that??? How can they trade a cool sounding name like "Revolution" for something so... childish like wii? OMG, I really really want to like nintendo, but every step they take they seem to slap at my adult face...

Me like many of my peers like to have consoles with manly names to play manly games (sorry girls, I really like that).... but Wii? I guess that the "Nintendo ON" fake was cooler...

How can they expect to win market share with a console titled like that? IMHO with that name they have already lost before the war begins!

User Avatar"Do you have a Wiiiiii on sale?
"A wha?"
"A wiii"
"We wha?"
"Wa wiii"
"Wiwi wa"
"Wi wa wiii"
(crash course in Maori language)

Seriously. Cute but a stupid, stupid name. A console's name should represent the soul and vision of the product. Somehow, "Wii" sounds more like childhood issues than a gaming thing.

FYI, apparently there's a petition against the naming of Wii, entitled "Don't name it Wii".

To: Nintendo

We, the undersigned kindly request that you do not keep the name "Wii" as the new name for the codenamed Revolution console. We feel it is silly and does nothing to promote the otherwise impressive and innovative features that will be offered. We request that the console either keep the name "Revolution" or it be named something less silly.

---

It has around 200 petitioners signed.
User AvatarI can understand the meaning behind all of it, but I still think its a stupid name. I can definitely look forward to buying the Wii, but does Nintendo know what the word means in English slang? All over the internet people are making penis and pee jokes.

If they were going to do this they could have just named it the Vagiina. That way people would KNOW they would be joking. Now we're sorta left to wonder what drug-induced state they were in.

Nintendo, I get the reasons behind all of your reasoning, but dear God what were your thinking.
