CVG posted that the Blu-ray versus HD DVD battle is in full flow and Microsoft has said that it will support it whatever format wins the war.

Neil Thompson, head of Xbox in the UK. "The Xbox 360 offers a better gaming experience than PS3 for £150 less," he said. "The only debate is if you want to watch Blu-ray movies and pay the extra money for that feature. We prefer to offer the consumer choice."

Thompson added, "Whatever format wins it is highly likely we will offer a solution."

For their sake, I hope its HD-DVD. Blu-Ray is owned wholly by Sony... and that'd be like giving money to the enemy, wouldn't it?

I don't see his point about a better gaming experience. I'm not fond of PS3, but even I realize that the 360 has had a lot of lead time on Sony. In a year, if they're still in the same situation, then things might be different. Right now, Microsoft has some nice titles, but for all we know Sony may catch up to them in the time ahead. Typical company-line bluster.

[/Q2 --end Jae Rune wrote--] Not really [/Q --end Servo wrote--] BluRay actually has more support than DVD+RW did. But I don't like BluRay because it's "Big Media" trying to control distribution again. They even chucked the established UDF filesystem for their own, proprietary one. But that's not the issue.

BluRay is going to end up like Betamax. Why? The Porn industry. The same reason why VHS won over Betamax, porn.

No joke people. Porn was VHS' "first killer app," adopted well by addicts before mom'n pop got it for the family. And the porn industry has adopted HD-DVD over BluRay, let alone Toshiba and others have opened up control to Chinese fabs and other partners.

BluRay will have its followers, just like BetaMax. Sony even has the PS3 as a conduit, the main reason the PS3's launch was held up. But for most consumers, it will be HD-DVD. Because the sames are already starting with Porn far in excess of family-type sales.

You heard it here first. ;)

Any word on the price difference between HD vs BR recordable discs? That's also going to be a deciding factor.

I think the biggest reason BluRay is going to go the way of the dodo is the price. I don't keep track of it, but at last check, I heard the price was clear over $1,000 per standalone drive...

edited for stupid error ;-)

I doubt price is that huge a factor; prices will drop eventually. don't forget when DVD first came out prices were extremely high; I think my first dvd player cost around $600. Also many individual movies were in the $30-$40 range, much higher than blu-ray movies are going for.

Back in VHS vs betamax, hom video was the onyl way to experience porn movies in your home. That is no longer the case by a long shot. HD-DVD is also controlled by big corporations, so I'm not seeing your point.

720p and 1080p cameras are commodity enough that independent people are starting their own porn sites. And creating home HD-DVD is rather simple.

I'm saying VHS won because it was the only way to get porn. There are many ways to get porn now, so it's no longer as important a factor.

Wait a second....they're going to make a decision based off of what is popular and best for the consumer? They're going to alter their business based off of the shifting market and what best for sales.....?

That's.....genius. Sheer brilliance. What and unheard of yet innovative marketing technique!

Simply, porn producers started distributing their stuff on VHS tapes, not Betamax or Video2000, for some reason. Porn used to be something you could basically only watch in theaters so it was a big factor. It boosted the sales of VHS VCR's.
