Banned MMOers coerced into donating blood
nullnullnull (1473), Mar 26, 2007
Weird Asia News is reporting that MMO operator Moliyo is allowing banned players to reactivate their account by donating 1 litre of blood. Unfortunately for those outside of Nanjing, players wishing to donate much travel to the city and donate in a public blood drive. Chinese hospitals have had increasing difficulty attracting blood donors in recent years due to scandals around unhealthy conditions.

Moliyo arranged the event in an attempt to “create a civilized society, and enhance online gamers’ appreciation of social responsibility and public welfare.”

Would you donate blood to get you account back? Can video game makers use their position to influence or coerce good behavior?
User AvatarDoing *something* to screen out the sociopaths is long overdue, since MMOs, and multiplayer games generally, seem to attract the dregs of the earth.

Or is it that people feel it is ok in a MMO to act in ways they never would in RL. I mean in RL anti social behavior has some real serious consiquences where as in a MMO you get kicked and would save $15/mo.
User AvatarIt's the same group of assholes that always existed, except now they have computers. I wouldn't say they're being coerced into donating blood, most of them would probably choose to play another game.

Does anyone think this is putting us on a slipperly slope to even weirder stuff in the future?
User AvatarWhy, of course! Future is increased weirdness. For example, why not donate organs? (I mean after your death.) Of course, this wouldn't work if you've already donated everything.

A single kidney goes for 2 game cards and a rare Mantle of Imperial Smiting +2. An important boost the the development of any character!

Yeah, I definitely agree that's part of it. It's really a big part of the appeal of these MMOs. After all, there seems little point to a role-playing game where do do everything exactly the same as in RL.

Still, I suspect a lot of these online creeps are creeps in RL as well. And I bet there are more than a few teenage-delinquent types who would rather get in serious trouble with their parents (or even the police) in RL than lose their WOW account!
User AvatarI don't know how good an idea this is. I mean, this is gamers' blood, which, as we know well, is criminal blood :P

Egads this raises frightening thoughts! Like...can MMO addiction be transmitted through blood transfusions?? :)

"I'm sorry, DNA analysis of your blood has shown a genetic predisposition towards being argumentative. We don't want your kind here playing our happy role-playing game. Furthermore, the state has now been issued a copy of this data, and an officer dispatched to your house to interrogate about any past troublemaking".
