GAMEBOY COLOR! (1990) on 10/19/2007 9:00 AM · Permalink · Report

This month is the thirtieth anniversary of Atari's 2600 video game console. Launched at a price of $199.99, in production from 1977 to 1992, it is the longest running console in history. It has a library of hundreds of games, as well as a home brew scene, solidifying it's popularity today. Happy anniversary 2600 !

Anyway, congratulations to my very first console, the Atari 2600!

@chirinea: The Master Systems produced in Brazil are clones, they're not produced by Sega. If unlicensed consoles would be taken into consideration, the NES/Famicom would beat the Master System, since it's still in production - numerous clones. But then again, even the 2600 is still in production - at least it was a while ago; I came across an unlicensed clone, one of those machines with a few dozen built-in games, all wrapped together in just a controller that plugs into your TV directly.

Imho, what's important is how long the company that created the platform supports and produces it. And that's where the 2600 beats all competition (and it's very unlikely that any console will beat this record).

Anyway, also made a newsitem about this recently: http://www.supersonic-games.com/newsitem.php?id=20.

Well, Marvin, Tectoy's consoles are about as licenced as they can be. They've worked with Sega since the eighties.

Ditto.

sigh sometimes I wonder why Brazil gets so little credit from the rest of the world. I mean, I know we're lame and stuff, but hey, we still have our qualities! =P

The A2600 is the first console that I ever used, but I do not know what game I played back then. It is the only console with a decent controller.

To chirinea, I did know the master system was still being produced in the 90s, but I had no idea that it was still being produced recently. sorry!

Let's not forget all the classic games we got from the 2600, like ET: The Extra Terrestrial and Custer's Revenge. :p

Atari 2600 is the first changeable-game console I ever used. We had a stand-alone Pong before that. And The C-64 ans NES after that.

I didn't see it mentioned anywhere, but I figured it would interest the fine folks of this thread: 2007-10-30 also marked the 20th birthday of the PC Engine (TurboGrafx for you folks who live far West of Eden).
