View Mode: threaded | watch thread Variety reports that Universal has signed a deal with Take Two to get the last year's critic's favorite video game into the cinemas worldwide. The director signed for the job is nobody else, but Gore Verbinski (Pirates Of The Caribbean and The Weatherman, an excellent indie feature). Verbinski spoke very highly of BioShock, complimenting on its narrative, style and possibilities the game holds for the big screen. The screenwriter is John Logan, known for The Last Samurai, The Aviator and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It is currently unclear whether the Bioshock original lead, Ken Levine contribute to the project. This is the most expensive "video game to movie" deal yet. Will it be the best? Best video game movie (although not a direct adaptation) is The Last Starfighter. We desperately need a good direct adaptation though. It's a sad state of affairs when the best direct game adaptations are Mortal Kombat & Silent Hill in my opinion.

Huh? The Last Starfighter -game was conceived for the movie only.
I meant that the game was referencing many space shooter games in arcades in those days. (Hence indirect adaptation)
I know this must've been discussed here before, but what on earth's name they can do with The Sims movie. Recite someone's daily life in two hours?
It's been done time and time again with 200 hours or more... :)

I guess they could make a reality show out of it. "Watch as a bunch of people live in a house and do their day to day activities...it's...THE SIMS!!" I predict another CGI mess! But I'm a pessimist and I should stay out of the film boards.
John Logan? Oh my lord, please tell me that this guy isn't going to screw up a BioShock movie too... He's the hack that wrote the screenplay for Gladiator and Star Trek: Nemesis. I know that Gladiator won an Oscar. I thought the movie was laughably bad. The script had scenes designed to show how much of a villian the emperor was. After a while, I expected to see a box of rocket skates from ACME Labs just like Wiley Coyote. Please let this guy pass on this project and others. ![]() Scott Monster Wrote:

Strange, I thought I was in minority for actually liking Gladiator. And although Nemesis deserves all the dirt, being spilled at it. It had its moments.
Games to movies never work out. It just ends up disappointing for everyone unfortunately.
You registered just to say that?!
Isn't there a rule that you have to contribute SOMETHING to stay a member here ?
No.

Super Mario Bros. features a tour de force performance from John Leguizamo! Role of a lifetime! Also notable is that they paid Dennis Hopper entirely in Hennessey.
I can't think of a single movie based on a Video game that was actually good. But I admit that The Mario Brothers movie was at least watchable. But a really good game is better than a movie. Grim Fandango has a great story. With ties to Pirates of the Caribbean and Sweeney Todd, I'm curious if Johnny Depp would have some kind of involvement :P
Expensive doesn't mean best.
But at least a bigger budget means less chance of a, say, Alone in the Dark, or House of the Dead. |
