In the '80s especially, there was a wave of games, often text adventures, puzzle games or the occasional arcade action game which would promise clues to the clever (or sometimes just directly reward winners or high-score earners) with tie-ins to real-world promotions of mad cash prizes or valuable treasures, like with Eureka, Swordquest and Hareraiser. Sometimes these would gather top players for a real-life finalist competition, but in all cases, the main hook of the game was the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow -- after the prize or contest was won, there was little reason to play the game.

Would it be worthwhile to gather these games in a group?

I don't see why not.

Don't forget Gradius, Golf, and Punch-Out (they were all associated with official company contests in Japan.)

Does this group exclude Activison patch games, which maybe should get its own group btw.

Sounds good. But, if the contest isn't mentioned in the game trivia/description...would be kinda hard for the approvers to not skip it though. :p
