Something that's been bothering me for a while is the way MobyGames currently handles game descriptions for multiple platforms. For example, if you take a look at the Zoo Puzzle description (for PS2), it's got "The 2P (two-player) mode allows you to play against another Nintendo DS owner without the need for another Zoo Keeper cartridge." in its description. Which it clearly doesn't, as it's for the PS2. (Another humorous example is Tales of Phantasia for the PlayStation, which boasts features such as "a 48 megabit cartridge" and "voice acting" for the CD version.)
I see that there's an "Edit Description" link below each description now. Will this edit descriptions all across the board, or is it console-specific? Console-specific would probably be ideal, as Zoo Puzzle's 2 Player mode greatly differs from Zoo Keeper's. Otherwise, it's probably better to make the game descriptions more general and not mention any specific platform, as it makes the other platforms obviously inaccurate.
yes this is true... if a game is so different between say a handheld and a console say the gameplay is different, available view perspectives are different then a separate entry should be made rather than a new platform be added.
if there are slight differences then add to the description... so for the new edit we can add, update, replace... a wiki style...
so for say the ds version descrip is there and the ps2 is similar enough, then you would want to edit and add to the existing description... and separate be platform.. would be nice to note the differences..
I'd also like to add that in general it's a good idea to keep platform-specific information out of the main description and instead place it under Technical Specs or Trivia if possible. It's just a good idea we're finding not to have features mentioned for a specific platform if it can be helped. If that game ever gets remade or ported to another platform (many 1990s titles have been appearing on Game Boy Advance), then like you say... that description is incorrect and appears silly.
As Corn Popper says, if the differences between two versions of a game are very great (e.g. Starcraft 64 on the Nintendo 64 contains missions from both Starcraft and Brood Wars and altered units from regular editions of Starcraft) then we should probably consider having two seperate entries. On the other hand, there are cases of games on different platforms being the same but one having enhanced graphics or a bonus dungeon or in some cases, even a new character. These items probably do not need a new entry, however the changes should be noted under trivia and/or tech specs.
In the case of Zoo Puzzle/Zoo Keeper, I can't give you a definite answer because I'm not familiar with it. I would say offhand that if Zoo Puzzle and Zoo Keeper control completely different then they should probably be split up. If on the other hand the games are the same with the exception of a 2player mode and link-up.... well that might be acceptable as merely noting it as tech spec or trivia... depending on how big a portion of the game that experience is.
In the case of Tales of Phantasia. That information on the description should be removed, but I think the game entry itself is okay.
Hope that makes sense!
Wildkard is right. By the way the description for tales of Fantasia is mine, I added it this way because I had no idea there was a PS version as well. But you are right that I shouldn't have written that stuff about cartridge size. That belongs to the trivia no matter how you look at it.
