Maybe I'm the only one who's noticed, but ever since Oleg posted his (negative) reviews of Half Life 1 and 2 a few months ago, we've had a rush of people knocking both games.
Have people been inspired to challenge the mainstream point of view? Have their eyes suddenly been opened by Oleg? Or are they just sucking up? I don't care if the games themselves are good or bad. I'm just wondering why all of these self-professed Half-Life haters have come out of the closet all of a sudden.
Oh my god, the Olegvirus is spreading! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!
(It's a joke, sheesh!)
The sad truth is that most people feel uncomfortable to criticize something that is revered by the majority. I got several e-mails from people saying that my HL reviews helped them "gain courage" and say what they think. It's silly, sure, but that's the way it is.
Gay Elf's review, however, was written before mine, so there's no connection in this case.
That makes sense. Sometimes what we call "free speech" isn't free at all because people are unlikely to say something they know will get them criticized and ridiculed. I might write a review of Starcraft one of these days...
Was I the only person who genuinely absolutely loved that game? Apparently everyone who claimed they loved it and deep down inside everybody really hated it and were too afraid to say it. And then there were others who just downright hated it regardless.
I remain vocal in my hatred, yet too lazy to write a review :)
However... I'm glad you liked the game, Matt, and rest assured there are many others like you!
You're kidding, right? Look at the MobyRank. Or the MobyScore. 99.99999% of the people all over the world love it. And I think they do it sincerely. I was also very excited by the game. It has plenty of cool stuff. It's just awfully overrated and superficial, that's all.
Hopefully that's the sort of thing he explains in his review.
No, that's the sort of thing Zovni explains in his review!
But the real bad thing in Half-Life is that it is completely over-rated. Half-life is a great game, but let's not confuse the issues, that doesn't mean it does anything new or innovative, it merely does everything we have seen before better. For instance, the storyline is a piece of crap, it's the usual "bad aliens come to kick ass" thing but updated to our current times (cue in the government cover-ups and X-files references). Why does it seem better then? Because it is made a part of the game. In previous games you played through a level/mission and then you sat back to watch the story unfold in cutscenes, on Half-Life the story unveils before your eyes in the game!! Revolutionary you say? I say System Shock, just because it's the first one that comes to mind. The gameplay itself is also unninspired, and shows the true nature of the game, for instance: take the giant tentacle sequence: what's it really about? flipping switches, and shooting anything in the way... However by lots of inventive designs and atmosphere tricks, we get duped into thinking it's actually a deep non-linear affair, millions of times I was fooled into thinking "wow, there must be hundreds of possible ways to finish this game" Wrong, Half-Life is a shooter pure and simple, and though it may seem deep it is actually Doom Redux: kill everything in the room, flip the switch, move on... ad infinitum.
Gee, I wonder who wrote that... I know it wasn't me :)
Maybe he was talking about Starcraft, that's how it looks from the outside :-) It gets a little difficult after IT JUST GETS WORSE's Starcraft post to tell what game is being discussed.
Yeah, it was about HL2, but don't you think that if even HL1 can be considered overrated, HL2 is certainly overrated as well? Because even the most die-hard fan of HL2 will have to admit that it does nothing HL1 hasn't done before.
Personally, I liked HL2 more than the first one, but it's still awfully overrated.
It's not so much its overrated. its more along the lines of perception. you hear "OMG BEST GAME EVAR!!" and you think "hey, it sounds like a great game" you go and play it and it doesn't reach expectations. I went into HL1 with no expectations, I just wanted to play it before HL2 came out. I loved HL1. I played it through till the end. That's very rare for me.
First and foremost you HAVE to remember it is a FPS. no more, no less. The skill in FPS games is keeping it interesting. I like being scared till Im pulling a spray and pray (even though I know its stupid). I like being pushed to continue. Like Black, I dont think I could play that very long. shooting stuff is fun, but give me some skill in it. How about letting me not either be hiding or shooting all the time.
Variety makes a game fun. Running and shooting for 3+ hours is boring.
