I admire your courage in admitting that :p

I'll actually back up Fred here. I really liked it as well. Ironically the part I liked the least was when you got to that open field and everything just became unfocused for a while.

What I actually likes was the contrast between Cocoon, where everything is linear and the characters must flee from oppressive authorities, and Gran Pulse, where everything is so free that you wonder what to do, feeling what the characters are probably feeling as well. You just get that freedom, and since you aren't used to it, don't know what to do with it and need to readjust.
Maybe I should write a review :P

Ultima IX and Might and Magic IX.
On a lesser scale: The Dig, Final Fantasy VIII, You Are Empty, Deus Ex: Invisible Wars.

Game of Thrones, Mars: War Logs

I don't think anything I loved was well-known-enough to be hated by anyone. I just love real obscure underdogs like Sword of Aragon, Pyro 2, Avoid the Noid, Humbug, Rockstar... by which I mean that a PD presentation is no impediment for me.
I could probably play with Racter for hours, which I imagine is an exercise most would opt out of after a few minutes.

Bullet Witch and Sonic Unleashed come straight to mind. Probably several dozen others. I'm a sucker for B-games.

[Q --start chirinea wrote--]Do entire console catalogues count? The Zeebo comes to mind! [/Q --end chirinea wrote--] I sort of feel this way about the Watara Supervision. I wouldn't say I actually like any of the games though, it's more of a morbid fascination.

I disproportionally like PC Engine CD.
As for morbid fascination - you all know my story with hentai RPGs... Fortunately I was able to end that unhealthy addiction.

Well sure -- once you have played through them all, what remains?

The problem with Ultima 8 was not the lack of party management, but rather the lack of character interaction and quests. Still, while I can't say I liked it more than the predecessors, I enjoyed it a lot. I named Ultima 9 instead of this one simply because I think it was hated even more...

Not everyone hates it, but I'd say Chulip is one that was really poorly received, but I absolutely adore. The characters and situations are absolutely sublime.
The N64/Dreamcast version of Army Men: Sarge's Heroes is a guilty pleasure of mine. It has all the makings of a terrible game, but somehow it just works.
I also have no end of affection for Jurassic Park: Trespasser. When the game works, it's quite compelling. When it doesn't work, it's just hilarious. It's possibly the only game in the world that lets you shotgun drunken dinosaurs.

Chulip is indeed very very special.

Special as in it takes the short bus.

Oh man, I forgot Chulip! I love it too, though I must say it did make me want to destroy the game disc more than once.

ATLUS publicly apologized for releasing Metal Saga is america, and it's my favorite PS2 game.
Everblue 2 is my second favorite PS2 game, but that's not so much a game that everyone else hates as it is a game that the majority of people have an unwavering disinterest in.

I'm trying Metal Saga now thanks to your recommendation.
So far, it's not just very fun, but atypically open-ended and non-linear and way more addictive than pretty much any other Japanese RPG I know.
How could this game be hated?.. Even if it gets much worse later on, the initial wandering is so cool already. Finally, I can explore on my own, without being confined to tiny corridors or dragged through cutscenes every several seconds!

Happy to hear at least one other person loves it.
I know you can read japanese, but if you want to play another game in the series Metal Max Returns, the SFC remake of the first game, was fan-translated.

Yeah, I'll definitely check them all out. And Metal Saga proved to be one of the best Japanese RPGs I've played.

[Q --start Rola wrote--]unknown, not popular =/= hated [/Q --end Rola wrote--]Yeah, I suppose you're right. Had trouble defining everyone since in my peer group, the only one that liked PC games was me. Dang console gamers.
I can answer the opposite question though. Quest for Glory 2 comes to mind.

Bloodnet, I loved that game so much, but everyone else seemed to get stuck on the terrible battle system it had. Yes it was absolutely horribad, but I couldn't care less because the game had so much atmosphere.

BloodNet is an excellent interesting failure.

I (like Jotaro) also feel like there's a special place for B-games in my heart. I think more often than not, I like games that have a heart and a desire to do things their own way.
So, while I can't come up with many games from the top of my head Michigan: Report From Hell kind of does have the qualities I seek. It's kind of a first-person-horror-point-and-click-action game in a way I've never really encountered before. The english dubbing is just horrifyingly bad, the game is all sorts of wonky and it kind of feels oddly empty most of the time. Yet, I couldn't drag myself away and I played through the whole thing in only a couple of sittings. It's by Grasshopper Manufacture, and I think a big part of what I love about them is that this is what they do. They don't care about how games "should be". They just do what they like and it usually ends up being kind of spotty in places, but it's repaid in sheer attitude and love of the product. And it shows. So I'd rather play any of those than a CoD or Halo with their massive production values and razor sharp production focus any day of the week.
In conclusion: Heart and soul before million dollar budgets.

You bet, every time I had a game party I throw Killer7 on to baffle my friends.

Just forced a group of my friends to play through Killer 7. After much resistance they came to love it. However, it was interesting to see some people who refused to play it and simply wanted to watch, and others couldn't resist the 'unusual' controls.

I finished Killer7 and I enjoyed it somewhat, but I have no desire to play through it again. The navigation is so limited it hurts.
