Hey all.

With all the hype about the new Pirates of the Carribean. I was wondering if anyone think its creator may be copying from Monkey Island Series?

Poor Gil was talking about it. And I agree there are similarities between the two...But then aren't all stories involving ghost pirates more or less the same? As for the beard...don't Captain Ghost Pirates ALWAYS have a beard?

Thoughts? Comments?

PS: I didn't see Dead Man's Chest yet...so no spoilers or I swear I'll start cracking nuts!

Well, Ron Gilbert has ALWAYS mentioned the original ride as a source of inspiration for the games. The dog that holds the key in the jail in LeChuck's Revenge is called Walt, as a tribute. Apparently, the ride has a whole lot of pirates in jail trying to trick the dog into giving them the key for a bone they've got.

From the sound of it, though, Ron seems to be pleased that it looks as though they're referencing the games he made. And to be honest, I'd think it would be pretty awesome if a big-budget movie made homages to a game I made!

Please go and see the movie! I want to see if someone else saw all the Monkey Island references that I thought I did! :-) (Also, it's a great bit of silly fun.)

The first thing a friend of mine said after having watched "Pirates of Carribean" (the first) was: WOW, it's just like Monkey Island!

I've already gone and seen it twice, once with my dad, and once with my friends. I liked the movie a lot, but since I've never played the game I can't tell you if there's a correlation between the two.

So, Matt, what are you waiting to play the #5 at our "All Time Best" game list?

Well, besides the fact that that I dont own the game, I dont know how to emulate DOS games.

So use ScummVM, which is a Virtual Machine adressed to run all SCUMM games and some other ones...

As for the game, well, that could be solved in other ways... ;)

I have to admit I never liked Monkey Island (shock, horror).

The problem was I liked the old text adventures. The good thing was you spent all your time thinking about the problems since when you wanted to do something, the action happened immediately.

With the graphical adventures you spent half your time watching clunky animations. "Guy walks", "Guy picks up something", "Guy opens door"... just to check something on the some other place took minutes, just watching the animations whereas in text games you were there in a second (remember the "wwnu" sequences?).

And I still hold Eric the Unready is far funnier..

[Q --start monkeyislandgirl wrote--]With all the hype about the new Pirates of the Carribean. I was wondering if anyone think its creator may be copying from Monkey Island Series? [/Q --end monkeyislandgirl wrote--] I didn't actually see that many coincidences (Not in the story itself, at least, although some characters do resemble some of the ones in the game), but I have to say that one of the things I thought as I stepped out of the theater was: "And just what the hell is somebody out there waiting to make a Monkey Island movie?"; so I guess there is something that makes gamers remember the games. Maybe it's all those pirates :P

In any case, like I said about a gazillion times in the last 3 days, I haven't had this much fun with a movie since the first time I saw Return of the Jedi, all the way back in 1984.

Actually I've been reminded of Monkey Island in another movie also... the skeleton army sequence of Army of Darkness (aka Evil Dead Part III). Sure they aren't technically pirates, but they're as silly an undead crew as has ever appeared with LeChuck. And the skeleton leader could easily be LeChuck's brother (another one?) if he had the proper hat.

Of course Army of Darkness has itself influenced a few things in Doom and Duke Nukem 3-D... long before Evil Dead movie licenses started coming out.

I only saw the first Pirates of the Carribean, and I didn't like it. Monkey Island is much funnier. And I really think there were too many similarities, what with the ghost pirates and the pirate-wannabe hero.

Besides, my girlfriend thinks this Orlando Bloom fellow is soooo handsome! I hate this guy! Pity the orcs didn't kill him in "Lord of the Rings" :/

I just don't get it, why do girls like those stupid celebrities... I for example can't stand those famous actresses. They put on heavy make-up, do some good commercials, and everyone think they are so pretty.

Angelina Jolie is absolutely not hot. An ordinary woman if I ever saw one.

I'm seeing a girl who likes Orlando Bloom too. He seems like a nice guy in interviews and stuff, but it's a shame he's totally ordinary and can't act. I hate that frickin' Johnny Depp though. I'm training to be an actor and every time I see one of his performances, I wonder how I even dare.

So if there was a Monkey Island movie, who should play Guybrush? Brian Blessed seems made for LeChuck.

Ok, right now I'm listening to the soundtrack for the first movie now so I thought I would post.

I just played Secret of Monkey Island for the first time and yea, there seems to be a lot of similarities. First of all, both Barbarosa and Davy Jones would make a good LeChuck. I mean, if the tentacles were a beard, of course. Then there's the undead crew, the prisoners with bad teeth (halitosis), the dog with keys. I didn't see any wannabe priates in the movie though. They were weither a pirate, or they weren't.

But the thing is, your GOING to have those things in common. I mean, look at the two things. Monkey Island is a game that makes pirates look funny. Pirate of the Carribean is a movie...that makes pirates look funny. Of course they're gonna have things in common! That's like saying that Battlefield 2142 looks too much like Star Wars because it has mechs, or too much like Starship Troopers because it has dropships. It's like sayinjg a porno is ripping off another porno because it has the same sexual position as another. Obviously these things are going to happen.

What would a good pirate movie be without an undead crew? What would it be without a twisted, bearded, pirate captain?

SOME things, sure. But come on - Jack Sparrow rows a coffin. They go to a Voodoo Lady. In a swamp. I was expecting someone to say "A bucket of mud, and it's mine, ALL MINE!"
