Does anyone have any information regarding the mobile version? As far as I know, it's content-complete but running on a different engine and may or may not feature cloud saving (not certain). The copyright notice on the App Store page only lists 3 companies, so the main development company is unknown.

From what I know it's a direct port of the PS2 version, and plays with touch screen. No mention of cloud save. It's also available for android.

It also says this version has DQM-style monster scouting. Was this in the original? I haven't seen it so far.

I didn't get far in the original, so I don't know for sure, but this here might be it: http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/583527-dragon-quest-viii-journey-of-the-cursed-king/answers?qid=38562

No major difference is mentioned is this review either: http://toucharcade.com/2014/05/29/dragon-quest-viii-review/

I've only heard anecdotal evidence, but I believe that this version also has an automation mechanic makes a character use the same action each turn as the previous turn without having to re-enter the command, which also works on the Hero. I know this wasn't in the original. There are other minor changes like increased starting money.

The developer, if not simply ported would either be Sqaure Enix or Armor Project.

The reworked battle system is also mentioned here: http://na.square-enix.com/us/blog/dragon-quest-viii-now-ios-and-android

"- The combat system has also been reworked, allowing for one-tap battles as well as more complex play."
