Includes the main Final Fantasy RPG series. One of the most popular Japanese RPG franchises, it still holds the record for most numbered games.

The games are usually completely unrelated by plot, but feature many recurrent gameplay elements. They are set in different fantasy worlds, sometimes with strong sci-fi elements.

One of the trademark gameplay elements of the series was the so-called ATB (active-time battle) combat system (first introduced in Final Fantasy IV and featured, with a few exceptions and some modifications in later games), which made actions chosen from the battle menu pass in real time, thus urging the player to think and act quickly.
