Genre: Versus fighting

Group Description

Versus fighting games (sometimes referred to as one-on-one fighters, though this definition is not precise) is a branch of fighting games that confines close-combat opponents to a small, enclosed area. As opposed to brawlers, the player-controlled character does not traverse a stage (level) in order to proceed to the next one; rather, the advancement is determined by winning a match and proceeding to face the next opponent, similar to boxing and wrestling games. Also, unlike in beat 'em up games, the opponents in versus fighting games are usually equal in numbers and comparable in strength, which makes these battles last longer than the battles in brawlers.

Versus fighting games often include competitive two-player modes. A typical feature of these games is the ability to control different characters, selecting them from a roster. The majority of versus fighters are one-on-one; however, tag-team fighting mode can sometimes be included as a mode or even become the main gameplay style in the game.

Limitations: Boxing, wrestling, and other games that may have a versus fighting structure but that deal with a sports branch should not be included in this group.
