Historical conflict: Spanish Civil War
Group DescriptionThe Spanish Civil War was fought in the years 1936-1939 between the ("red") Republicans - supporters of the leftist government - and the ("white") Nationalists - conservatives who rebelled against it. While limited territorially to Spain, both sides received support from other countries ("whites" from Germany, Italy and Portugal, "reds" from Soviet Union and International Brigades of volunteers), with even neutral states engaged in clandestine weapon sale. The conflict was often portrayed as a clash between fascist and communist ideology. The war served as a proving ground for the new tank and aircraft tactics, soon to be employed during the Second World War.
