The release of the Seventh Guest in 1993 has been a revolution for adventure gamers and played a decisive role in the growth of CD-ROM drives installed. I saw people buying CD-ROM drives just to play with the 7th Guest, and one of the reason why it sold so well might be because it was among the few products that were pushing CD-ROMs to their upmost capacities at that time. Moreover, the 7th Guest was a technological breakthrough featuring SVGA 3D rendered graphics, computer animations up to 15 frames per second and video with a cast of professional actors. If you look closer at what is being done today in the computer games industry, you will notice that the 7th Guest was a precursor who strongly influenced the other computer game companies. Now with the release of The 11th Hour, the sequel of the 7th Guest, will we again be the witnesses of a new generation of games or just find another rehash packed with additional graphics and puzzles? You will find out if you read what follows!

Do any of you remember the Vincent Price classic The House on Haunted Hill? The 7th Guest's environment always reminded me a bit of walking through that house. Now what do gamemakers, dealing with the exact same environment, do to vary it and make it look fresh? Give it to a motorcycle club as an open house for the weekend. And that's exactly the condition you find the Stauf mansion in this sequel to The 7th Guest, and believe me, it works just fine.

I can only repeat that this is an excellent game for anyone who loves puzzles and games, and quiet contemplation, with a bit of story thrown in for good measure. But if you like your games with a bit of zip about them then maybe it's not for you. And it may not be for you if you can't take a spot of criticism -- Stauf has a limitless supply of insults up his sleeve to fling at you if you fall short of expectations.

Well, I'm bedraggled and my head is spinning, but I've finally made it through to the end of this game. It's wonderful, almost perfect for those who like to ponder for hours over mind-bending puzzles. In a nutshell, it's a 'thinking' persons game so if you favour exploring creepy old houses with lots of puzzles and games to keep you occupied then you simply can't miss this one.

Overall, I found that The 11th Hour turned out to be more frustrating than it was worth. Although I'm a graphics and media whore, I wasn't very patient with the puzzles that seem unrelated to the storyline of the game. If you're like me, avoid this one. However, if you are one of those people who can't wait for the challenge of an enigma to be solved, BUY IT IMMEDIATELY!!! I promise, you won't be disappointed. The creators put a lot of work into this one; four years to be exact, and they deserve a lot of credit. The 11th Hour is probably the best game of it's type. Advanced graphics, a phenomenal music soundtrack, more than challenging puzzles, and extremely well done, high-tech, digitized video clips. Although the storyline could use some work. This game won't scare you, but it will keep you perplexed for hours!

In the end, The 11th Hour is little more than a frustrating experience. It is very clear that a great deal of effort has gone into the game. Eleven years after its release, the graphics still look quite pleasant. Navigating the mansion is a simple matter. There are a number of puzzles that should be quite entertaining to solve. But the game is lacking in too many other aspects. While the storyline is more coherent and clearer than the previous game, it is somewhat lacking in depth. There are a number of fun puzzles, but the mini-games you play against Stauf can easily become frustrating. Despite the presence of some cleverly constructed riddles, the “Treasure Hunts” boil down to annoying exercises that test your patience. The game fails to create the kind of atmosphere that draws players in and creates a feeling of immersion. It just feels like a series of puzzles with a number of puzzles thrown in between and a storyline that focuses more on past events than your own actions.

The 11th Hour is a good game for those who are really puzzle fanatics. For anyone else, maybe not so much. As in its predecessor, the puzzles are diverse enough that it helps to have a couple of brains working on them. The more perspectives you can apply to the problem, the better your chances of solving it. I didn't really think the story was as large or cohesive as in 7th Guest or Myst. If you have a high tolerance for frustration, it might not be a bad game to take along on a road trip -- provided you have a mouse for your notebook.

The 11th Hour: The sequel to The 7th Guest has taken over four years to produce. It is obvious that Trilobyte attempts to capitalize on the success of The 7th Guest which considered by many to be one of the “killer app” that popularizes the CD-ROM technology. This time, the terror of Stauf falls on an investigator reporter whose girlfriend has mysteriously been kidnapped while investigating the Stauf mansion. Armed with a hefty production budget, can Trilobyte remake history by hailing Stauf’s return? Unfortunately, not quite…

Without meaning to, The 11th Hour has taught the gaming industry a few valuable lessons: First, the sequel isn't always as successful as the original. Second, pretty graphics and cool video sequences do not ensure a good overall gaming experience. Third, and perhaps most importantly, game creators should stay true to their claims, or they'll disappoint their audience in the end.

DOSAll Game Guide
All in all, Trilobyte has made a bad game. The 11th Hour is a huge disappointment, even the Trilobyte designers themselves said they didn't want to make it. And they shouldn't have.

MacintoshAll Game Guide
Despite having only an hour's worth of video, which is doled out in snippets and a longer sequence near the end of each disk, The 11th Hour won't be solved quickly -- prepare for a significant time investment to put Stauf to rest.

WindowsAll Game Guide
Bottom line: The 11th Hour is, at best, a mediocre title that will satisfy some and leave others looking elsewhere.

Overall, 11th Hour is a mess in its storyline, its poor puzzle quality, its too-high-end requirements, and its general lack of consideration for the game player. I would not recommend this game to anyone.
