The system that you use to build and control your people’s destinies becomes second nature after playing the game for a few minutes, and you’ll find yourself making your colony grow and thrive in no time. The game runs well on legacy systems, and on anything modern, it positively smokes. This is an absolutely fantastic game, and is a must-buy... if you’re a fan of the genre. If you’re not into building up colonies, micromanagement, and the occasional battle, this definitely isn’t your game. But if you were into the Civilization-style games before this one, 1602 A.D. is a must-buy.

The interface is nice and clean and little shield icons appear if a verbal message is being given. When you originally goto an island and its resources are evaluated you get a video clip which although it's not subtitled it is clear to see what the message is (i.e. a hand holding a gold nugget is to tell you that the island has gold deposits). The tutorials are subtitled so you won't miss anything that is being given out verbally. The manual is also very good and will help you settle into the game very quickly. This is a game that will appeal to any gamer who has the slightest interest in city building simulations/ general RTS. Even if you usually find RTS games to quick paced then Anno 1602 Gold Edition could be your gaming cup of tea.
This is a very in-depth game with many things to do and keep track of. If you want more than just a chess-like strategy game, then this is the one for you. I keep describing it as Simcity combined with a little Warcraft, but I can't think of a better way to describe it. If you liked Simcity and want to try it in the 1600's, then get this game.
Solid civilization builder that all fans of the genre may want to check out. Even if you aren't a fan of the particular genre, you may enjoy some of the fresh new features in the game that makes it enjoyable to all gamers all around.
1602 isn't without its share of problems. The graphics are amazingly dated and the economic model of the game requires a great deal of time and patience to master. I can't tell you how many games I played where I found myself with no money and no way to earn. Still, with its polished interface, deep gameplay and surprisingly low price (EB's selling it for about $20) this is a game that's pretty hard not to recommend.
1602 A.D. captures the feel of the historical period very well and carries you along without the extreme highs and lows that characterize more fast-paced and violent games.
These downsides can be overcome, and none of it is enough to keep 1602 A.D. from being a decent game--but it is hardly outstanding either. It is a reasonable colonial-era, city-and-trade simulation with some combat, a game that is essentially closer to Caesar III set in the era of colonialism, than Sid Meier's Colonization or SSI's Imperialism. Players looking for another unique city-building simulation, one with numerous variations including individual scenarios and full campaigns, will find this a solid game. That said, 1602 won't be the last word in colonialism.
1602, in all honesty, does begin to fall apart in later stages of the game, partly because of the forced resource-scrounging/trading and partly because of design omissions. Some kind of grand, overall How-Am-I-Doing screen would have been nice, but instead it's up to each player to babysit and mircromanage the colonies, ever vigilant for supply hitches and complaints. Still, 1602---this little upstart of a none-too-cutting-edge game---comes very close to small-scale empire-building excellence and is worth a look, especially if you can talk some competitive friends into a session.
Although plenty of thought went into the internal workings of 1602 A.D., the interface, combat and tutorials are left somewhat unfinished. If you have the time and patience to learn the game, you'll probably have fun. Otherwise, full to starboard out of here.
Computer Gaming World (CGW)
In fairness, the game does have a weird, counter-intuitive charm that keeps you coming back, restart alter restart — at least if you’re a reviewer who isn’t allowed to just go back to THE SIMS. And if nothing else, the next time a snooty German makes a rude comment about how we Yanks made DEER HUNTER the top’ selling game in the U.S., you can whip out a copy of 1602 AD. and slowly, deliberately, begin to chuckle.
