Closing Comments FIFA World Cup 2002 is the best PC Soccer game available at the moment. Like Muhammad Ali pulling the 'rope-a-dope' EA has bounced back from producing three or four dodgy incarnations of the license and answered the criticisms of the past with a knock out blow to all opposing PC Soccer games.

The number of game-play options may be cut down, but when it comes to the game itself, EASports has created a program that is simply incredible. This is an easy one to recommend to fans of the sport, or to fans of sports games in general. You will be amazed by the action, stunned by the graphics, enthralled by the audio, and thoroughly entertained by this program.

If you're not happy with the starting lineup, no problem, you can change it. You also have a choice of stadiums and whether you want to play a day or a night match. There's a huge number of moves to master; controls vary depending on whether you're directing a defensive or offensive player or a goalkeeper. Up to four players can team up or pit themselves against each other. To begin with it's less humiliating to play against a friend than face the onslaught from the CPU. If you're not up to playing a World Cup, then you can partake in a friendly match. There are super teams, such as topranking France, to unlock. The rules of the game can be adjusted; in fact, so much so that you wonder if you're still playing soccer. For example, offside and carding can be disabled. If you have the gumption to master the controls, then this game will hold your interest long after the World Cup has been decided.

In fact the entire game is a kick-butt tour de force. No, it's not a simulation. The gamer's skill can significantly change how well a team plays, but who cares? It's fun, it's exciting, and it's challenging -whether played against the artificial intelligence or your big sister. So if you like soccer, get 2002 FIFA World Cup. It's a kicking good time. Sorry, I had to say that.

Xbox owners holding their breath for EA’s soccer series to grace their machine can finally exhale. 2002 FIFA World Cup sports all the improved controls and visuals of previous versions on other systems, giving the Microsoft console the well-rounded football simulation it’s been waiting for.

Overall, EA delivers again with FIFA2002 World Cup and the minor negative points of FIFA2002 have been corrected. A must for soccer fans.

Although the game feels more like an upgrade to FIFA 2002, it still is a very thorough representation of the 2002 World Cup.

This is a good soccer program, featuring excellent animation and sound and solid game play. If there is a drawback it would be the lack of gaming options. However, fans of the sport will doubtless enjoy this outing.

With its few shortcomings, 2002 FIFA World Cup is an excellent portrayal of a game that is loved around the world. However, it should be noted, that while this game is the only official licensed game of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, all of you soccer nuts really have no need to get this on if your gaming library already has EA Sports' FIFA Soccer 2002 in it. This game has fewer options than the previous effort. It's mainly a soccer title that was created to highlight EA Sports' acquisition of the World Cup license.

Not the deep experience to be found with last fall's FIFA Soccer 2002 MLS, the slightly better gameplay engine from 2002 FIFA World Cup is overshadowed by a lack of features. An exhilarating soccer experience to be sure, the improved shooting engine and extra animations are huge bonuses for football diehards. Casual soccer fans however may want to pass this one up in favor of the fuller, more rewarding experience in MLS.

The 32-bit quality and technical excellence of "FIFA World Cup 2002" on PSOne cannot be denied. Those soccer maniacs that know what they're getting into (a stripped-down rehash of the excellent "FIFA 2002") will not be disappointed. For the average human being a rental will more than suffice though, since the price of this game (and that of every other console version of "World Cup 2002") is sure to drop dramatically come July of 2002. Go Ecuador!

This is such a hard game to judge. On the one hand it's certainly the most atmospheric soccer game ever released, and it a perfect tie-in to the real event in Japan and Korea. Electronic Arts are still refining the game engine, which is pretty solid now although the real disappointment is with the frame rate and animation on the players which needs some more work. The choice between this game and the original FIFA 2002 is a tough one. If you're after more options, teams and leagues then this game may not be for you, but if you want a game based on the second biggest sporting event in the world then this game will keep you very happy.

As the first soccer game on the Xbox, I have to say 2002 FIFA World Cup is easily the most fun to play. The fact that soccer translates to videogames so well and EA's attention to detail when it comes to gameplay kept me and all of the other soccer fans around the office engrossed for weeks. That's saying something considering all of the different games that come through here.

It seems like it was only yesterday that FIFA Soccer 2002 hit stores and now we've already got another soccer game from the good folks over at Electronic Arts. I purposely avoid the word sequel, because 2002 FIFA World Cup isn't really a follow-up as much as a sort of director's cut or an add-on chapter to last year's game. As the name suggests, EA's latest focuses squarely on the World Cup tournament which takes place in Japan and Korea from May 31 to June 30 of this year. Though FIFA 2002 featured a Road to the World Cup mode, players who wanted to take their favorite national team to victory were out of luck: qualification was as far as you could go. 2002 FIFA World Cup picks up where the old game left off and brings the excitement of the tournament home like no other game, but it's an upgrade and a downgrade at the same time.

All in all, a very good soccer game. As I have said before, the past few years of FIFA have been filled with lackluster games that really don't make you feel as if you are playing the beautiful game. Finally, EA has made a return to good soccer games. And what better to do it with than the Official World Cup game. Buy it!

Again, I don’t agree with EA sports whoring the World Cup license and not living up to it by providing a full assortment of options. They either should’ve included more teams and a “season” option or simply just lowered the price by about twenty bucks (CAN.) to make this a novelty purchase that’s certainly worth those type of bucks. Having said all that, this game kicks its predecessor in the ass. It looks better, plays better, sounds better and damnit, it just feels right. If you have the first GC version of FIFA you may just want to hang on to it until FIFA 2003 comes out with a full franchise mode instead of trading it in for the Coppa di Mondial version of FIFA. Make no mistake, this is a better playing game and presentation, but it is lacking serious depth.

While 2002 FIFA World Cup is an excellent game on its own, it doesn’t surpass its cousin, FIFA Soccer 2002. Casual players of FIFA Soccer 2002 won’t need to pick up this title, but die-hard World Cup fanatics will be engrossed in the atmosphere and authenticity of the recreated World Cup experience.

There is, however, an excellent four-player mode that, coupled with the slick presentation, makes it feel as if you and your friends really are taking part in that most important of football events, and it’s certainly the most atmospheric of the three football titles on offer. But, as it stands, why bother when you have two superior footie games available – ISS2 for its lovely intuitive controls, and Virtua Striker 3 for arcadestyle action. It’s great to see the FIFA series on the rise though, and our hopes for the next instalment are very high indeed.

FIFA:lla on omat hetkensä.

Unfortunately, EA Sports has pulled a fast one on us all by releasing a second soccer game instead of just including the World Cup mode on the original FIFA 2002. Because of this, you'll have to choose if you want the ability to play season mode (FIFA 2002) or the chance to win the Cup (2002 FIFA World Cup). Choose wisely, as maybe EA Sports will find the one-game solution for next year's soccer.

If you already own FIFA 2002, then there really isn't any reason to own 2002 FIFA World Cup, and if you don't own FIFA 2002 but are looking for a soccer game, you should get that game instead.

It may be riddled with inaccuracies – 12 substitutes, Ronaldo starting as a left-sided midfielder – but as a piece of official merchandise, it's certainly a lot classier than Big Brother's Bubble and Dean's World Cup record. Ultimately, the best way to look at it is like an interactive wall chart. By the time the real thing starts, you'll know your Saitamas from your Yokohamas and will be able to discuss the emergence of the African nations with a degree of confidence. And as a bonus, it's just about playable enough to fill the month before the tournament. Then the real fun begins.

The game is pretty good and does well duplicating the World Cup and the great sensation of soccer/football. Sadly, there isn’t much to do and it does get boring when there isn’t anyone to play multiplayer with. It is pretty cool for collectors to have this as a collector’s item since it’s licensed by FIFA and all.

All in all, 2002 FIFA World Cup can be considered a mixed bag of blessings. We have the fantastic visuals, sounds, and atmosphere on one side, and some obvious gameplay drawbacks on the other. I am sure true fans will go out and buy this game regardless of what I say but, if you're not a die-hard, and don't particularly care about the World Cup; and you own a copy of FIFA 2002 by any chance, I suggest you give this one a miss and wait for the next bona fide sequel - FIFA 2003.

I'd say that the controls make for a good, not great soccer game. I think you score a bit too much, but I also don't think that your average gamer is going to want to play through a 1-0 victory in extra time. The game pales in comparison to the actual World Cup, and isn't a very good representation of it. I wished that this game would have just waited till 1-2 weeks after the Cup ended to set everyone's stats again, or ideally 1-2 months to touch up the players unique looks. So, a minor disappointment, but easily one of the better soccer game experiences I've had. If you want to feel all inspired, check out the nice Bonus Materials and find out what soccer (or football) means to people around the world. Good stuff.

2002 FIFA World Cup overcomes all the nonexistent competition to be the best “real” soccer game for the PC. (If not for the Xbox version, it would also be the best-looking soccer game around. But that’s all that I’m going to say about the Xbox.) Fortunately, given the lack of other options, the PC version is at least a fun game to play.

2002 FIFA World Cup is definitely better than Electronic Arts' last effort. It still may not be in the same league as Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer but it's a decent playable souvenir of the tournament, available a whole month before the real thing kicks off.

GameCubeGamePro (US)
2002 FIFA World Cup arrives for the GameCube less than a year since its last appearance with a fancy new look, but not much more. If you already own FIFA 2002, upgrading to the World Cup edition actually gets you fewer teams and play modes. Instead of the field of over 400 teams in last year’s edition, now you choose from 41 (plus a handful more that can be unlocked) and either compete in a Friendly match or the World Cup itself. EA makes the most of the license and does do a great job at simulating the grandeur of the experience, but it often feels shallow and forced as if the whole thing were directed by Micheal Bay. Another GameCube soccer alternative, Virtua Striker, does a much better job of recreating the rewarding feeling of earning your way to the World Cup after months of training and team management.

If you own FIFA 2002, it will definitely sting to fork over another $50 for what?s basically 1/3 the game. But if you want to bask in World Cup frenzy, 2002 FIFA World Cup will make a great rental.

While possessing some nice play mechanics, FIFA World Cup 2002 for the PS2 isn't going to redefine soccer gaming any time soon. Rent it if you want, but the lack of depth makes it a tough buy.

Yleensä sarjapeleillä on tapana edes marginaalisesti parantua osa osalta, mutta FIFA tuntuu kulkevan täysin päinvastaiseen suuntaan. Olkaa hyvät: virallinen kisapeli, jota kukaan ei muista kisojen loputtua.

In the future, I hope they ditch the Star Player concept completely. The world has too many arcade soccer titles out there as it is. Unless you’re a serious hardcore World Cup nut, this game is a rental at best. It’s fun for a while, but knowing the 2003 installment is just around the corner, 2002 FIFA World Cup just doesn’t have what it takes to hold up for the long haul.
60
XboxEurogamer.net (UK)
It's hard not to take a negative tone with this game, and I'm sure by now the conclusion (and pun) must be obvious, but I'll say it anyway: EA has dropped the ball with its latest release. Let's hope this poor showing doesn't return the series to its position of outright inferiority. Lacking the depth of its major rival, saturated with problems and bloated with unnecessary detail which actually works against the developer, this FIFA is a blotch in the copybook of an otherwise competent arcade football series. Not even sterling presentation and John Motson can rescue the party, and ultimately this deeply average incarnation of FIFA may not sell as well next time unless something is done to rectify the situation.
60
PlayStation 2Computer and Video Games (CVG)
002 FIFA World Cup plays a clumsy game of football. It's easier to dribble the ball than pass it, as the game draws dots on the pitch to show player runs and the game also makes pass execution frustratingly hit-and-miss. Creating a scoring chance isn't hard, though you'll often hammer stupidly wide and wonder why. When the roar goes up for a goal, you don't feel nearly as pumped, as goals come pretty cheaply.

To wrap this up, this game shows potential but this game was made to capitalize on cup fever. In no means is this game worth a full retail purchase. There are some positives in the game but without a qualifying component, no way to edit teams or modify the tournament then there’s no reason to play this game past a few times. I’m sorry to say but FIFA World Cup 2002 is game to catch consumers when they get cup fever rather a game to provide the ultimate World Cup experience. What’s even worse is this seems to be a trend in EA Sports games. I hope the FIFA 2003 offers a more complete soccer experience rather than just trying to make a buck.
