PlayStation 3The Review Busters (2009)
For ten bucks this game is almost a steal, the controls are set up just like NHL ‘09 and gives you a good quick game or if you just like being goofy and messing around with your buddies. The edge goes to no one in this one, it all depends where you like your sticks. If you’re a hardcore hockey fan and can’t stand all the cheaters on NHL ‘09 go out and grab this one, it’s an absolute buy.

But even with the issues, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade's a must-play for fans of arcade sports, and I want to commend the makers for mercifully extracting the pointless bloat of pre-game intros and a circling zamboni between periods. It's one less thing for me to button through en route to what I care about most: playing the game. Sure, I'm crossing my fingers for add-ons like NHL teams, an online tournament mode, and the chance to play with five other players on five other systems. But for the measly cost, I'm happy to keep slugging it out in ranked games for the time being.

3 on 3 NHL Arcade doesn’t have a comprehensive slate of gameplay modes and options, and it’s easy to write it off for that reason. But what’s there is enough to keep gamers coming back again and again: tremendously enjoyable core gameplay, superb sound design, impressive visuals, and a wonderfully old-school-oriented multiplayer experience. And when you factor in the price -- just ten bucks -- it becomes much easier to justify the purchase. If you enjoyed arcade sports games back when console specifications were measured in bits, I’d definitely suggest that you pick up 3 on 3 NHL Arcade.

This game is such a blast with friends, it is non stop action and mayhem. If you’re looking for a game with a lot of depth and choices look somewhere else, but if you want a game where you can lay out a goalie as your friend is scoring the winning goal, then this is the game for you.

If there’s a good reason to buy 3 on 3 NHL Arcade, it’s the Xbox Live play. This doesn’t hold true entirely, due to the nature of the three-person team set-up. They persistently triple-team the puck carrier and after scoring, a couple players will disable the intended puck-receiver as the rubber drops from hockey heaven. More likely than not, the guy who knocked down will grab the puck and swing in for a wrap-around goal. As the doppelgängera crowd the zone, they’ll penetrate each player, one by one, collecting power-ups and ultimately leading to your demise. Your CPU teammates will never assist you in easing the pressure of a three-on-one attack, so I can only recommend Live play for people who have at least three controllers (only two Xboxs are allowed, per game).

PlayStation 3IGN (Feb 05, 2009)
Much more could have been done with 3 on 3 NHL Arcade. A tournament mode would have helped a great deal, as would unlockables and the inclusion of NHL teams. All-Star NHL players are a great thing to have, but in the end, people care about their favorite team more than a collection of unaffiliated players. The over-the-top gameplay is a good fit, but it is a bit unimaginative. Shrinking goalies and massive body checks aren't exactly stretching the boundaries for an arcade game. Why not have fun with on-ice intros or the end-game announcement of the 3 Stars? Where is my Zamboni race between periods?

If this were included as an unlockable bonus mode in a "proper" NHL game it might offer a welcome change of pace. Trying to pass off a single, stripped-down mode as a full game is nothing but an insult to hockey fans though. Don't fall for it.

For $10, NHL Arcade is an outstanding deal for players seeking out a sports game that is fast-paced and fun, with no dull moments in-between. It may not pack the single player punch but the game is an experience designed to be enjoyed with others, creating rivalries and breaking controllers. You know, the good old days.
