In the end, it's a bit pricey at 800 Microsoft Points, but 3D Ultra Mini Golf Adventures is a fun multiplayer game, especially on a Saturday night with a favorite beverage nearby.
All in all this is a very good game. Wither you are tired of playing Tiger Woods, or you just miss going to the mini golf greens this one is sure to please. It even has replay ability since you can play it online with friends, or strangers which ever you prefer.
Minigolf Adventures, at a fair $10 price, is a worthwhile download. The solo campaign is limiting, and there’s nothing to unlock aside from some challenging achievements. Online is where Adventures is allowed to become what it’s meant to be, and with four players and a bomb power-up, this becomes as addictive as Worms.
The course design is the real highlight within 3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures, with gameplay that will frustrate until you figure out every detail of each hole, something that will take longer than most would care to spend with a XBLA game. The multiplayer gameplay is fun because of the power ups, but the single player portion will struggle to hold your attention. Invest in this if you’re a diehard golfer, or if you want a relatively easy 200 Achievement Points, but steer clear if you’re looking for a simple minigolf game that won’t take long to master.
All in all, 3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures isn't great, but it's not half-bad. If you like these types of games, then you'll probably be perfectly happy with this product, especially if you have friends to compete with over Xbox Live. It doesn't really raise the bar or set a new standard, doesn't offer anything I haven't seen before, and is unlikely to make any converts. Considering who made it, I guess we can all just be happy that it actually works.
While the real sport of golf translates well to video games, miniature golf generally does not, so 3D Ultra Minigolf was facing an uphill battle from the outset. It's not a flat-out bad game, but it's not particularly exciting, and its cause isn't helped by the bevy of gameplay issues. Even with these problems, it may be worth 800 points ($10) if your primary interest lies in playing with other people and you really enjoy putting, but unless you fall into that very specific group, you'll want to stay away.
Whether you're simply after another 200 gamerpoints to ferret out or just a few hours distraction from meatier offerings, Minigolf will probably meet your expectations, though much like Assault Heroes, Wanako's previous Live Arcade offering, the overall experience tends to favour the functional over the thrilling. It's adequate amusement for the price, perhaps, but still falls short of the gut-busting potential presented by online crazy golf.
3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures is one of those games that you'll play through a couple of times and then never play again.
