This gorgeous game marks a new standard in digitized, computer-rendered games. If only other CD-base game systems could live up to 7th Guest, then every gamer would be able to experience the joy of a well-conceived, beautifully created game. For now, CD-i owners lucked out.

Anyone who entered into a software store around 1993 has probably heard of, or vaguely remembers, The 7th Guest. Its hype and sales roughly equal those of Myst, and probably would have remained just as legendary, if it hadn't turned into something of a one-hit-wonder. Otherwise, 7th (I refuse to call it by its cutesy-ass marketing name T7G - "heeeey guys, lets go play some teee-seven-geee!") and Myst stand together as the leaders of 1990s Nu-adventure - each of the two setting up a unique gameplay mechanic to replace aging text-based systems and take advantage of new graphical capabilities.

All in all, if Shivers is like a Tim Burton film, I'd have to say The 7th Guest is the Roger Corman of adventure games, mostly from the creepy, second-tier acting and costumes, like Fall of the House of Usher, a three-star Corman effort that is still relegated to American International release versus a major studio.

Wow! If you've never heard of 7th Guest before, you're in for a shock. The graphics are simply mind-blowing with beautifully rendered scenes of the Stauff mansion. While simply walking around and playing puzzles at various points seems boring, just fire this puppy up and you'll be hooked. The music adds a creepy side to the game so I wouldn't suggest playing with the lights off. A great game with no real replay value.

The 7th Guest is a game that should be almost exclusively played for its puzzles. The game has very noticeable problems with its storyline and its atmosphere. However, if you like solving puzzles, it can still be a great deal of fun to play. It is a distinct experience that remains surprisingly playable to this day. The 7th Guest is significant for its structure and intense focus on puzzles. It will not be the best game in your collection and it certainly does not have the plot depth you will enjoy in many other adventure games. However, if you missed this game when it was originally released and if you like adventure games that feature lots of puzzles, The 7th Guest is definitely worth a look.

WindowsMystery Manor
This was a fun game to play for perhaps 6-10 hours. With little story or exploration, it is only marginally in the genre of adventure games. It is a great game for the puzzles, and if you like cheesy “B” grade horror flicks, you’ll love the melodrama.

DOSJust Adventure
Play this game if you're in the mood for good puzzles and good cheesy fun. This genre-defining game is well worth a look if you missed it the first time around.

CD-iPower Unlimited

Technology comes and goes; graphics once dazzling will fade, and then all a game has to rest on is its story and the intrigue of its challenges. Take a look around our forum sometime and see how many people list games like Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father or the older Tex Murphy games amoung their favourites, and you will realize that people love those games despite their now inferior graphics, because they have great stories and challenging puzzles. That is why The 7th Guest was almost a great game.

WindowsAdventure Gamers
The 7th Guest is as famous and significant a game as Myst—well, almost. Released a year before Myst in 1993, it had the same kind of luminous graphics wound around a familiar point & click format. It tantalized users with a siren song of perspicuous graphics and open exploration. Gamers flocked to game stores clamoring for it. However, that is where the similarities between the two games end. Now some years later, Myst has proved a durable survivor of the adventure game exodus, still holding a great deal of its original appeal, while The 7th Guest has slowly faded into obscurity.

DOSAdventure Classic Gaming
The 7th Guest has written itself into the history book as the “killer app” that hails the introduction of CD-ROM technology. It is a graphical adventure extravaganza but fails to deliver a succinct story and original puzzle play. Who wants to be The 7th Guest?

CD-iThe Video Game Critic
Much like the early Alone in the Dark games, the developers failed to understand that bright, clean, colorful rooms just aren't very scary. Even the "surprise" animated clips that are supposed to be intense fall flat. 7th Guest is a novel concept, but despite its good looks, there's not much of a game here.
