Alex Gordon is a cat who wears a hat and wrangler-like clothes. While exploring a tropical island he and his sister find a beautiful bejeweled amulet. As they examine it, the jewels disappear. Suddenly, the Monkey King, Alex's arch enemy, kidnaps Alex's sister. So the main goal is to rescue Alex's sister and find the missing gems for the amulet.

Alex Gordon is a single-player platform game. There are five worlds with different environments (land and sea), fifty levels, and fifteen secret areas. In addition to running and jumping, Alex can swim under water and climb ropes or vines to reach his objectives. Coins, life hearts, gems and stars as well as the scattered pieces of the artifact need to be collected to progress through the game. Collect stars to get bonus levels; coins buy things to decorate Alex's personal island.

The gameplay starts on the island that Alex and his sister were exploring before she was taken and acts as a tutorial to introduce the player to the basics of the game. The island has areas on ground and underwater with platforms, ropes, elevator lifts, and trampolines as well as simple enemies (turtles, panda bears and piranha fish). Jump on an enemy's head to kill him (for coins) or jump over him. Alex can also push a barrel to destroy enemies. Wooden crates hold treasure and can be broken by jumping on them. Secret areas can be found by jumping twice on the floor. In later stages, upgrades to Alex's equipment can be found like special boots and scuba gear.

Alex can have a maximum of nine lives. Levels increase in difficulty as the game progresses and each can be replayed to try and get a better score. The game is controlled using keyboard keys with mouse support for menus.
