So where does that leave us? AM's Alice was a hit; did Alice MR measure up? Yes, and in many ways exceeded AM's Alice. Alice MR is not a game of endless quests and leveling up. It is a single quest. There is a young girl to save and then the game is over. But there will be a lot to do before you get there and it was very well done. I give Alice: Madness Returns a solid “A” for nailing it.

Alice: Madness Returns is one of those games where the presentation and story help the game overcome its technical issues, at least for me. I was willing to overlook the game's minor problems because the story kept me interested enough to play through to find out what was going to happen next. While noticeable, the fighting and camera issues I mentioned weren't bad enough to detract from the overall experience. Alice: Madness Returns isn't a perfect game, but like Alice herself, once drawn into Wonderland you may find yourself staying there for awhile, all the time being fascinated by its beauty and its hideousness. That said; if the concept doesn't excite you, then you may want to stay out of this rabbit hole.

Alice: Madness Returns is definitely a tea party you’d be foolish to miss. The breathtaking design and imagery mixed with some exciting and fun platforming makes for a really solid gaming experience. Flaws poke up here and there and it’s not exactly game of the year material but it is an overall strong effort from the team at Spicy Horse. If you’re looking for a bit of a change of pace and something a little different than your standard shooter fare that is currently littering the market then maybe this is just the game for you.

Despite some problematic platforming and a tendency towards tedium, Alice: Madness Returns is a worthy follow-up to the original. It also stands on its own as an enjoyable action-platformer with a twisted story and gorgeous visual design, so even if you have no experience with the original game, it is still worth checking out.

Xbox 360Frictionless Insight
Alice: Madness Returns is a substantial and solidly entertaining platforming experience. It's a dark, artistic variant on the world presented in Alice in Wonderland that more than makes up for being overly brooding with solid play. It's a strong entry in a genre that lately has been woefully under-represented in a quality fashion.

A wonderfully realised fantasy world that is equal parts entrancing and disturbing. The story is well realised and will keep you enamoured until the credits roll. There are a few niggles here but nothing to stop Alice: Madness Returns from being a wonderfully different slice of entertainment. Now who's for tea?

With all the advantages of an original design, Alice Madness Returns feels rushed. It has a decent length, no useless chapters and the story doesn’t drag on, but some sections needed polishing, both from a technical and visual standpoint. A platformer, a rare sight nowadays, has to be technically perfect, otherwise it shoots itself in the foot because this kind of gameplay is essentially repetitive. The same thing goes for the puzzles (too easy ) and fights. Still, the game catches you in its crazy universe enough so you really want to see if Alice remembers that faithful night and if it really was somebody else to blame or it was her that gave life to a criminal fantasy…

If you're looking for a good 10 hour platformer, I can honestly say you’ll enjoy Alice: Madness Returns. The story alone will carry you through some of the more tedious combat sequences, or the needlessly complicated jumping puzzles. Just don't go in expecting the same level of crazy from it as you got from the first game. After your first 3 hours hunting for pig snouts and being attacked by Screwflys, you’ll realize this isn’t the same Wonderland Alice left behind.

Creative and creepy visuals give this action platformer a twisted and surreal vibe, drawing you into a land inhabited by fire-breathing doll babies and squirming leeches. The action doesn't display the same kind of creativity, unfortunately. The game recycles the same basic ideas over and again, and its failure to grow and challenge leads to occasional tedium. Nevertheless, leaping and floating through an eerie oversized dollhouse and a Japanese-inspired dreamland is a joy, and there are enough hidden secrets to make it worth inspecting Madness Returns' grotesque nooks. Alice: Madness Returns is a fun but thoroughly ordinary game that takes place in an extraordinary setting.

Alice: Madness Returns is a fun, if not sometimes repetitive game that constantly stuns with its beautiful visuals. Though marred with repetition and the occasional immersion-breaking invisible wall, is a thoroughly enjoyable experience that is supplemented with twists and turns through a well-written story. Any fan of the original American McGee’s Alice should be sure to pick up this great yet flawed sequel and return to Alice’s twisted Wonderland.

Alice: Madness Returns is one of those games that's better in parts than it is as a whole. The world inside is imaginative and creative, but looking deeper reveals a much less polished game. The combat is simple, and the level design is hindered by bugs that don't let you explore how the game wants you to. Fans of the original should definitely check out this ambitious sequel, but those who have yet to jump down the rabbit hole may want to hold off.

Alice: Madness Returns is an enjoyable title as a whole, offering an interesting romp through an engaging storyline. It faults are clear though, and force a dip in the entertainment value that lasts for a good couple of hours. While its overall design feels old-fashioned, the qualities and consistencies of that design hold true against modern pressures. It feels good to play something that doesn’t swamp you with set pieces and impossible vistas, but at the same time Spicy Horse might have treated the player to a bit more variety. A worthwhile return to Wonderland then, but not a trip that will ever be considered a classic.

Alice: Madness Returns was a fun game, especially if you have a knack for a little darkness or are just a fan of the first game. I personally due, so it was amusing to see that mixed with the developers art style, along with a classic fairytale that has its own kind of mystery to it alone. The weapons and environments truly could not have been more creative with a touch of humor. In terms of content, it really doesn’t get much better than this because even though there are only five stages, you’ll be at the game for at least 12 hours. On top of that with the original American McGee’s Alice included with every purchase you are essentially getting a whole other game. If you were a fan of the original or are just looking for something different, I would suggest you check out the game, because there is really nothing else like this on the market.

It’s a shame that the play is so damn ordinary. It’s disappointing when titles so obviously focus on one element of the experience and hope that it’s enough to hide gaping flaws in the rest of the title, particularly when this sort of world allows for a massive amount of creative freedoms. For a story that talks of falling into lunacy, it’s interesting that the game’s quality matches the mind of its antagonist; Alice is a cracked mirror; you can see what it could have been, but you’re stuck with what it is.

Xbox 360Brash Games
Alice: Madness Returns isn’t quite as mad, original, or inventive as its thinks it is. On the contrary; for a game that features flying pig snouts, tattooed cats and a Scottish octopus with penchant for booze, it’s strikingly conventional.

PlayStation 3Brash Games
Alice Madness Returns is an accomplished platformer. It does what it does well, but it never quite fulfils its potential for greatness. The platforming is sturdy and the combat is solid, but the story, while intriguing, never quite captures your imagination and the odd difficulty spike is enough to render you as mad as a hatter. What you get is essentially the same game as ten years ago, only curiouser and curiouser. Initially captivating but ultimately nothing more than a flashy pack of cards, this second trip to Wonderland is only recommended for those with great amounts of determination and – more importantly – a sane mind.

That’s the big problem. Alice: Madness Returns isn’t very polished. While the game touches upon some great elements, it’s kneecapped by dated and boring platforming, frustrating combat, and a generally sloppy application of theme. McGee and his team are clearly a talented bunch of designers, but when the game they make isn’t fun to play, that’s a problem. I don’t doubt that Alice: Madness Returns will sell well because plenty of people liked the first, but I hoped that when McGee re-imagined Wonderland after all these years, he could at least make a decent game out of it.

Alice Madness Return will wear on you with its repetition, but its haunted, twisted style makes it a trip worth taking.

Madness Returns does a lot of interesting things, and if it hadn’t tied itself to such a beloved property and had used original characters, this might be a very different review. But having set the bar high and falling short, it might be better for players just to go back and play the first game, or better yet, go back even further and just read the original books.

I fail to see how anyone who is not a crazed fan of similar titles would carry this game through to the end. If not for a great story and some impressive, symbolic artwork, this game would have scored much lower. That’s all this rather disappointed reviewer can say, really – the game didn’t give me much more to go on.
