Allied General

If it sounds like I enjoyed this game, well, I did. Unfortunately for my wife, I've already lost a weekend on this one. Probably more to come. SSI just keeps pumping out titles that are truly a credit to the gaming industry. This game is worthy of any computer gamer's library, not just wargamers. It'll provide many hours of fun. And, with the e-mail option, the gamer has limitless numbers of opponents to find.

With the sequel "Allied General", gamers will again find an excellent challenge in strategy and the very same interface that made the game so popular. This time, instead of playing the role of the Germans during the World War II, "Allied General" puts you in command of the other side, the Allies.

When S.S.I. released Panzer General in 1994, the game immediately encountered a tremendous success with the public who, for the first time, discovered a strategy game not only easy to use but also very complete and accurate.

Für die Freunde solch zeitraubender Strategie-Kaliber allerdings kein Grund zum General-Streik: First Class-Hardware vorausgesetzt, gehört auch der jüngste Sproß der SSI-Familie zu den ausgesprochenen Prachtstücken in diesem Genre.

No realtime strategy here; you can plan your moves like in chess. This game is very pretty and there is just something that never fails to excite the history buff about seeing the doomed city of Berlin with an enormous Soviet force just thirty miles distant. Allied General's only flaw is that it is simply too much like its predecessor, Panzer General. If you liked the original, you will definitely enjoy the sequel. If you want something slightly different and innovative, your best bet would be to go for SSI's Steel Panthers or its sequel which is to be released sometime next month. Den enda riktiga kritik jag har är den oerhörda mängd RAM-minne du måste ha för att spela Allied General. 8 megabyte är minimum, men för att Allied General ska flyta smärtfritt bör du ha det dubbla.

I think the reason that I enjoyed Allied General was that I also enjoy the challenge of chess and this allowed me to offer the game the patience that will reward you with success. However, if you prefer your games to be action packed scraps, then the game also offers an excellent two player option where you can challenge a mate to play the role of the enemy troops and annihilate his forces, reducing him to tears. I wonder what my son is doing next Sunday afternoon?

Allied General is a true onscreen wargame in the Avalon Hill sense of the word, complete with hexes, zones of control, attack/defense factors, movement points, and stacked units. Players assume the role of an Allied or Axis commander in strategic-level WWII operations in three campaigns, which means Playstation owners can now experience desert clashes with Rommel's Afrika Korps forces; the expected Soviet and American operations in Europe; a number of hypothetical alternate-history campaigns (such as Winston Churchill's speculative and slightly wonko Operation Jupiter, a talked-but-never-walked invasion of Norway); and over 35 individual scenarios.

Macversionen skiljer sig inte mycket från PC-versionen och fungerar utmärkt. Grafiken är tydlig och spelet flyter. Som brittisk, amerikansk eller sovjetisk befälhavare ska du med hjälp av armé, flotta och flyg befria Europa från Hitlers trupper. Den enda kritiken jag har är att Allied General ser ut som strategispel gjort i tio år nu. Men gillar man traditionella strategispel är det helt okej.

Will anyone buy Allied General on PlayStation? It's doubtful. To succeed on this format, Mindscape, this sort of game needs kick-ass visuals and presentation. Otherwise you shouldn't bother.
