Abandoned Places: A Time for Heroes

This is Electronic Zoo's first attempt at a game of this magnitude and they've done well. The gameplay is good, the puzzles are intriguing and the control system work well. Also, the outside world adds depth to the gameplay and the size of the dungeons will keep even the best adventures going for months. However, the presentation, in particular the graphics, let the atmosphere down. This is a game for players who want a tough, lengthy challenge. Inexperienced of new adventurers will probably find the task daunting and a tad inaccessible.

Abandoned Places may not represent the new standard in RPGs - it's a bit too scrappy in certain areas for that - but you can bet your bottom dollar it'll be responsible for a great many hours of lost sleep among the die-hard D&D fraternity.

Abandoned Places is an outstanding first project by any standards, and it's an impressive first foray into the role-play domain for Electronic Zoo. It's not the toughest dungeon romp on the streets but it is the biggest. It's not the most thrilling, but it does have the extra depth of the town and wilderness sections.

OK, die ungarischen Programmierer haben sich kräftig bei der Konkurrenz bedient, aber gut geklaut ist ja bekanntlich schon halb gewonnen. Wir sehen also keinen Grund, warum Ihr Euch nicht auch in Abandoned Places verbeissen solltet – guten Appetit!

Verglichen mit der genialen Wizardry-Saga von Sir-Tech schneidet Abandoned Places leider etwas mager ab. Technisch läßt sich das Werk von Electronic Zoo am ehesten mit dem spielerisch gehaltvolleren "Amberstar" vergleichen (Oberwelt in Vogelperspektive, Dungeons in 3-D). Wirklich toll sind die 3-D-Labyrinthe und die grafischen Zauberspruch-Effekte: Ein Feuerball verwandelt schnell die vorderen zehn Spiel-Quadratmeter in ein flammendes Inferno. Watscheln die Charaktere über die glühenden Kohlen, werden ungezügelt Hitpoints abgezogen. Abandoned Places findet sicher seine Freunde bei Liebhabern leichter Einsteigerspiele, die weniger Wert auf knackige Puzzles legen. Alleine der Reiz, ein neues Monster oder einen frischen Dungeon zu entdecken, sorgen für die nötige Motivation und Abwechslung. Für Rätselknacker wird zuwenig Spielstoff geboten. Diese sollten sich das textlastigere Amberstar zulegen.
