Centurion: Defender of Rome

As far as strategy games go, Centurion is one of the best. The Roman era has been beautifully created and the map is especially well designed. Unlike most games of this like, it is easy to get into yet difficult to master but you will have a lot of fun trying.

I particularly liked the touches of humour which appear in the manual, although the game itself still has a tendency to be a little dry and monotonous. That taken, I haven't enjoyed a strategy game as much since Supremacy, which had what amounted to scenarios - sadly missing in Centurion. Despite this, fans of the genre will be very happy with the game.

When Centurion first appeared on PC we played it to death, but the Amiga version, rather than being greeted with yawns of "Been there, done that, naff off", soon had us all reaching for our togas. Not an earth shattering game but good fun nevertheless.

The intense strategy is broken up by the arcade scenes. It's very easy to get into because it has an easy control system but perseverance will be needed to get anywhere near the rank of Caesar. This could become one of the classics of the genre.

Centurion's gameplay army is composed of graphics, management puzzles and tactical warfare simulations. The two flanks cut swathes through enemy lines, but the centre falters slightly - although it does not break. This leaves the Roman army as a strong foe that's slightly weaker than it should be.

Ljudet är genomgående bra; värt en eloge. Som summering tycker jag att Centurion är ett intressant och roligt spel; jag tänker då främst på de fantastiska fältslagen. Betyget dras dock ned av att grafik och ljud inte är lika bra i alla spelets delar.

Leider wird das Eroberungsgeschäft bei genügend Durchblick schnell langweilig: Feind und Freund reagieren immer gleich und sind schnell berechenbar. Im Kampf stehen recht wenig Taktiken zur Verfügung. Ein schlichtes Strategiespiel mit wenig Tiefgang.

Stimmungsvolle Grafiken, schicksalsträchtige Melodien und netter Hintergrundlärm bei den Schlachten und Actionszenen erfreuen Auge und Ohr. Auch die Steuerung bereitet keinerlei Probleme, nur macht es Centurion dem aufstrebenden Imperator etwas zu leicht – schon bald schmilzt das Interesse an dem Sandalen-Epos wie Schnee in der Frühlingssonne. Tja, mit einer Mehr-Spieler-Option wäre Rom ganz sicher nicht an einem Tag erbaut worden...

A good strategy game when it's out on the field, but let down by some dull empire housekeeping and a couple of real clinker arcade sequences.

A graphical tour de farce - a historic tour de farce Chariot racing. gladiatorial combats, and detailed military battles would scent to be the answer to an Emperor’s dream. However, its relation to historical versimillitude is coincidental.
