Computer and Video Games (CVG)
All of the features of the arcade have been successfully translated, even down to the massive gun turret that the Mercs can commandeer and use to their great advantage! The eight-way scrolling playfield works well and is a nice innovation. The graphics themselves are as close to the coin-op as can be expected and there's a nice variety in all of the backdrops and sprites. For the most part, the sound and music fit the bill perfectly (though the music at the end of each level is a bit lacking) with nice raucous explosions and hard tunes to accompany the frenetic action. MERCS is a nice conversions that fans of the coin-op original will love to bits.

Amiga Action
After the recent conflict in the Gulf, there seems to have been a new breed of war style games. Mercs continues the current trend, taking the Commando style shoot'em-up one step further. In terms of gameplay, there's no improvement over past products, but technically it has improved. The action is fast and frantic, while the difficulty level is perfect. The addition of extra weapons and power-ups is also appreciated. Although not standing out from the crowd, it will appeal to fans of the genre.

The One for Amiga Games
Ardent fans of the coin-op will have no problem getting into this one - others will probably only bother if they have a friend around.

All told, Mercs gives Warzone a good run for its money. Mercs is more fun for one due to its higher level of action, but Warzone has the edge for two-fisted action.

The graphics are all handled very competently, but do tend to give a feeling of déjà vu. In fact, this has all been seen before - and in a better form. The addition of a two-player mode adds the usual attractions, but neither player will get that much extra enjoyment out of it. The translation's pretty true, but who played the coin-op that much anyway?

Amiga Joker

Amiga Power
Yet another production-line coin-op blaster, but what it does, it generally does pretty well. A well-converted but very average game.

Amiga Power
Great at what it does, but you're likely to want rather more from a game in this day and age.
