Volfied

Volfied, along with Arkanoid, is a requirement for the section reserved for classics on every arcade gamer's shelf.

Arcade perfect conversion of Taito's updated Qix. Gameplay - despite complications - is simple as it comes, and like all the best simple games it works superbly. Could get repetitive in long term.

Having never even heard of the arcade version I can't really comment on how good a conversion this is. Graphically it is very colourful and the various enemies are well-drawn and animated. All the backgrounds are well laid out and look good. Soundwise the game could have been better, the various sound effects sound like they are from a game from two years ago, which might be when the arcade game was released, and the tune comes very annoying very quickly. Sadly the more you play the game the more frustrated you will become, because it is very annoying when you know how to complete the screen but keep dying. Still, it is one of those games to play when you are out of things to do and feeling a little bored.

Grafikmässigt är Volfied inte speciellt upphetsande. Ljudet låter som om det kom från ett spel som släpptes för ett par år sedan. Även om Volfied kanske är den mest avancerade Styx-klonen hittills så är jag övertygad om att det finns liknande spel i floran av PD-program som är minst lika roliga. Om jag letade efter den här typen av spel så skulle jag först söka igenom PD-biblioteken noggrannt innan jag köpte Volfied.

Volfied ist ein solides Spielchen zur Entspannung, ohne durch irgendeine Art von Neuerung aufzufallen. Die Spielidee ist zwar alt und gut, wirkt aber heutzutage etwas abgegriffen und verstaubt. Neue, revolutionäre Ideen sind gefragt - ständige Aufgüsse von Klassikern gibt es zur Genüge. Einzig die netten Extras lockern das Ganze etwas auf: Über das Alter der Spielidee täuschen sie aber nicht hinweg. Grafik und Sound bewegen sich auf mittelmäßigem Niveau - für den Spielspaß trifft gleiches zu. Der absolute Qix-Fan wird Volfied jedoch lieben, denn eine gewisse Motivation kann dem Programm (dank guter und fesselnder Spielidee) nicht abgesprochen werden.

Die futuristischen Hintergründe sind ebenso hübsch wie bunt, die Gegner schnell, geruckelt wird nur selten. Auch die Sticksteuerung ist bounty, der Sound hingegen nervt recht bald. Nur: Wenn man erst mal weiß, wie am besten geschnitten wird, hat das verstaubte Gamedesign bloß noch Fleißarbeit zu bieten!
