AND 1 Streetball

On the visual front, AND I Streetball is not a bad-looking game at all and while it could have been a lot prettier and featured less clipping on the Xbox, the player models look really good. The camera is good at following the action and the moves look natural as they’re being pulled off. As for the courts, they’re nicely detailed and that’s a great thing but when people in the crowds start blinking on and off you know all is not visually pleasing. There’s clipping, especially when you’re swatting for the ball your hand seems to phase right through a player and the framerate drops to an annoying stutter sometimes.

Man versuchte damals nicht, mit einem besonders hohen Realismus aufzuwarten, sondern vielmehr den Spielern auch in diesem Bereich eine Freizeitbeschäftigung für Fans der Ballunterhaltung zu präsentieren. Mit dem 'einfallsreichen' Titel „Basketball“, der seinerzeit für den Atari 2600 erschien, waren damals die ersten großen Erfolge zu verzeichnen.

Man, sometimes a game just hits you right in the gut. I'm a fan of both Ubisoft and the And 1 property. Ubisoft tends to make some of my favorite games, and I've loved the And 1 mixtapes ever since I was in middle school. I'm certainly predisposed to like And 1 Streetball, so there must be something wrong with it if I'm not interested.

I really feel bad for Black Ops and their basketball games. Both times they are going to be thwarted by the EA juggernaut. Still, these guys deserve credit for developing two solid basketball games despite the snickers and giggles amongst the gaming world. And they deserve credit for the contributions they made to the genre four years ago. It’s just a case of too little too late.

Alles in Allem ist dieses Spiel ein sehr schönes und detailgetreues Spiel. Kein grafisches Highlight und die Musik ist auch Geschmackssache. Schwer genug wird es allemal, sodass auch eingefleischte Zocker dran zu knabbern haben und nicht ruckzuck durchgespielt haben. An den Kameraeinstellungen hätte man auf jeden Fall noch etwas feilen können, ebenso an den Gesichtszügen in den Wiederholungen. Trotz alledem ist And 1 Streetball ein Spiel was nach etwas Einarbeitung in die Materie durchweg Spaß macht und den Erfolgsdrang in einem hoch kitzelt.

'AND 1 Streetball' ist ein ambitionierter Versuch, den Streetball-Thron zu erklimmen, stolpert jedoch aufgrund der verkorksten Steuerung über die eigenen Füße. Eingefleischte Fans dürfen gerne reinschauen, alle anderen greifen lieber zur Konkurrenz.

Arcade sports fans haven’t had too many new titles to get excited about these days, especially those who want nothing more than an NBA Street-killer. AND 1 Streetball doesn’t fulfill that dream, however, there is some joy to be had within the multiplayer experience. Rent it, but be sure to return it on time – it’s worth $8 for a seven-day lease, but doesn’t have enough oomph to make it a must-buy at the full price.

And 1 Streetball adds one more player into the growing genre of Street sports. Although based in a real setting of the And 1 Mixed Tape Tour, the game doesn't quite get the fluid motion of the sport to make it memorable. And 1 Streetball should be considered for a rental if you're getting a little sick of your NBA Street game, or want a new diversion for a while. For fans of the And 1 players, you can safely pick this one up. Average would be the word for And 1, but I wouldn't throw Black Ops and Ubi out of the game just yet. A little more polish, reworking of the controls and maybe And 1 Streetball II can play with the big boys.

AND 1 Streetball is a visually solid, fundamentally sound game, but it's still a hard sell over long-standing, superior franchises like EA's NBA Street. If you're not a devoted follower of fan-favorite players like Hot Sauce and The Professor, chances are that the innovations here aren't going to bring you over to AND 1's side. It's too bad, too, because taking your game online and scanning your face onto a character (via EyeToy) really lets you put your personality not just in-game, but out on the online court -- and that's cool.

Streetball, by nature, is raw, energetic, and full of the spirit and charisma of the players who do it for the love of the game. It's the flashy, loose, high-flying game that's part Globetrotter, part CBA. Fittingly, the videogame is a pretty even parallel of the real thing.

AND 1 Streetball sets itself apart from other basketball games by placing equal importance on outscoring your opponent and looking damn cool doing it. Just like the real-life, trick-play AND 1 traveling team, the game overflows with impressive athletic moves, grandiose showboating and tongue-in-cheek entertainment value. As a foul-less, unruly streetballer, AND 1 emphasizes action and delivers with an incredibly deep “I Ball” control scheme that allows you to juke, jive and embarrass your opponents in hundreds of different ways. With a few quick flicks of the right and left analog sticks, your player becomes a blur of hyper-athletic supermoves, trick passes and monster dunks. Pulling off these cool, showy moves is a simple matter of organized button mashing, but mastering the complex control scheme to produce the specific killer-combo you want can take a lot of practice (and patience).

Schade liebe Entwickler. Auch wenn die alte Xbox langsam in der Versenkung verschwindet, hat sie nicht so ein langweiliges und uninspiriertes Spiel wie AND 1 verdient. Der Offlinemodus ist streckenweise lieblos zusammengeschustert und auch das Gameplay nicht gerade motivierend gestaltet. Selbst der Multiplayer im System-Link mit bis zu zehn Spielern und der Online-Multiplayerpart, in dem ihr es bis ins offizielle AND 1 Online Team schaffen könnt, reißt den Titel nicht aus der Mittelmäßigkeit raus.

The hip street basketball has been a favorite occupation for the gaming couch potato and now there's also Ubisoft's AND1 Streetball where you can do your thing on different fields with your black alter ego. It immediately becomes clear that Ubisoft doesn't go for simulation but from the first second wants to give you a lasting adrenaline shot.

Il est vraiment triste d'attendre un jeu pendant si longtemps et tomber d'aussi haut. J'avoue que j'avais été surpris de voir Ubisoft s'embarquer dans un jeu de basket, il semble que leurs équipes de programmation sont beaucoup plus fortes pour des Prince of Persia ou Splinter Cell qu'un jeu de sport. Je ne sais pas si c'est une licence qui permettra à la société de continuer le développement et de l'améliorer pour le prochain essai, mais souhaitons-le vraiment parce qu'un divertissement comme la tournée And 1 mérite un produit nettement meilleur que ce qu'on nous propose ici !

It had some good ideas in it and its heart was certainly in the right place, but the horrendous execution of all of those ideas is what ultimately leads to the downfall of AND1 Streetball. The I-Ball controls were a good idea, but the fact that it uses both analog sticks really hurts the possibility of having a functional gameplay system. There are several other bugs in the game that also hurt the experience, and that’s not to mention the relatively shallow Mixtape Tour mode. If you’ve already beaten the snot out of every NBA Street that’s out there then you might want to rent AND1 Streetball but otherwise you’d be wise to steer clear of this one altogether.

Even without the disgustingly difficult and frustrating control scheme, it looks one step behind all other basketball titles, sounds fairly average and plays very repetitively. There is no reason to pick this up if you have another basketball game, and if you don’t have another, get one!

Het spel draait toch voornamelijk om alle strakke moves en andere stoere acties maar het besturingssysteem werkt dit echt enorm tegen en dan is het op een gegeven moment niet eens meer leuk om het te proberen. Het spel geeft me het gevoel alsof het nog lang niet af was maar dat ze het voor een deadline in de winkels moesten hebben liggen. Met wat meer diepte en een betere gameplay had dit spel menig fan van Streetball nog wel wat leuke uurtjes op kunnen leveren, zeker in multiplayer. Helaas zit dat er voor dit spel naar mijn mening niet meer in. Mensen die toch echt fan zijn van Streetball kunnen dan wellicht beter kiezen voor het betere spel in dit genre genaamd NBA Street.

While the obnoxious ads shouldn’t be taken into account when critiquing a title, its poor execution of nearly every aspect of gameplay warrants plenty of scolding. Placing players in a position early for failure, then failing to reward them with engaging gameplay or satisfactory basketball action is simply unacceptable.

With everything that is wrong with this title, it’s simply rubbing salt in the wound by plastering in-game advertising everywhere. In fact, I can’t remember a more blatant example of in-game advertising ever; the tutorial is sponsored by Dodge and the replays are sponsored by Tylenol. I understand that in-game ads generate revenue to cover the rising production costs of many of these games, but when the gameplay in a title is this questionable it’s hard to get behind plastering ads anywhere you can. While the obnoxious ads shouldn’t be taken into account when critiquing a title, its poor execution of nearly every aspect of gameplay warrants plenty of scolding. Placing players in a position early for failure, then failing to reward them with engaging gameplay or satisfactory basketball action is simply unacceptable.

I’d typically say this game was rushed out the door but it’s been in the works for at least two years now, so that can’t be the case. And when you are coming in on the coattails of Midway’s Phenom game, you need to grab the gamer hard and fast. This game just smacks you around and leaves you dazed and confused. Unless you are a huge AND 1 fan, please avoid this game, otherwise find some cheat codes and unlock the movies. They are the only thing worth public consumption.

I have full respect for And 1, the folks that produce some of the best street-ball action out there. They have players who go out there and "ball" every night, playing their hearts out without the weight of a gigantic shoe contract, limitations that would require a dress code, or a major audience trying to "click" with them. Watching these guys square off in a game of hoops is rather enlightening, although it's frustrating trying to find them in the listings at times. (Oh, sure, I can find a Heat game no problem, but to find Half Man's latest game? Nightmare.) So it only hurts me deeply to see that their first foray into the gaming world is backed by an effort that can only be called average. Hell, below average.

Love it or hate it, you gotta admit that the And1 Streetball tour is a pretty incredible phenomenon. What began as a series of underground streetball VHS tapes has evolved into a lucrative touring attraction, a massive sports clothing and shoe brand and a well-received documentary series on ESPN. The Harlem Globetrotters? Still stuck on Gilligan’s Island, probably.
