Archon Ultra is a complete remake of Archon.
The game features a completely rewritten game engine, new graphics and sound as well as digital music (a la MOD files), along with a new style of game board and an additional "special weapon" for each figure. It also adds multiplayer game (modem as well as hot seat).

The Good
A good remake of the old classic. Nice VGA graphics on the board. Cool music.
The Bad
The graphics in the battlesequences looks a little bit cheap, especially compared with the look of the rest of the game.
The Bottom Line
Fun Battle Chess kind of game, but it feels more like a shareware game than a fullprice game from SSI who otherwise release these pompous strategy war games.

The Good
Well, let me set one thing straight: this game is written by Toys for Bob. As such, I would not have made any bad comments even if I had any (and I don't). Archon Ultra is a great, amazing, perfect game, which retains the original Archon's addictive gameplay while adding amazing graphics, excellent sound, great music and fantastic gameplay.
This game rocks..

The Bottom Line
Only game I can say with a straight face is better than Archon Ultra is the classic and underrated Dark Legions... too bad this game won't work on newer computers.

Trivia
Bugs
Archon Ultra is obviously based largely on code from Star Control 2 as it also suffers from some of the same bugs (sound hanging under Windows as well as color corruption with newer VGA cards). Unfortunately, the bugfixes that apply to Star Control 2 do not apply to Archon Ultra.
They also didn't test their sound library, DSMI, with Gravis Ultrasound cards, which require different handling. On a machine with a GUS, the sound is very slow during idle time.
