Out of the recent cast of online-ready FPS titles for the PS2, I would personally have to rate Area 51 slightly ahead of Project Snowblind, and just a step behind Timesplitters: Future Perfect. While I feel that technically speaking, Project Snowblind, and Area 51 are nearly identical in overall quality – the sheer intensity of Area 51 puts it a nose ahead of Snowblind. Area 51 is absolute, hands-down, non-stop action. Future Perfect; however, edges out all of the others based solely on the size and scope of the total package. With its immense array of story, online, arcade, and mapmaking modes, few can compete. Still, if you are looking for a killer FPS for the PS2, look no further than Area 51. It’s a real treat.

Aliens and video games go hand-in-hand, and their relationship dates all the way back to Space Invaders. Years back, Midway released their light-gun coin-op entitled Area 51; an entire game based around shooting up aliens in the secretive military installation where experiments are carried out. Midway has brought the title back with one of the most impressive first-person shooters around, especially in terms of its structure and storyline.

Overall I enjoyed playing the game. Area 51 has some refreshing content that did not fall into the body count type FPS. Being a Sci-Fi head I enjoyed the story line behind the Area 51 complex and being able to frag aliens just gave it a natural feel to the game. This is a must have in your PS2 library.

Yes, progress is rapid, well, until you finally meet the Greys, that is. These intergalactic bastards have a nasty habit of spawning endless troopers, and fights you had reasonably under control suddenly become health-sapping wars on two fronts - one to kill the alien, another to deal with the troops. It's a struggle just to keep your health from draining away before you've even fired a shot at the target - the worst fights are much like trying to keep water in a sieve. Checkpoints are generally well placed however, and you're hours in before even seeing the dreaded Greys, which makes things feel pretty climactic. It's supposed to be a challenge. And the things you see! The furious battles, the gore of past attacks, the secret experiments, the captured craft, the hoaxes in progress, the conspiracies, the boss battles, the caverns of machinery, the sharks with guns (really), the atmospheric mystery of the Greys... level, character and story design is all incredibly strong.

The magicians of our era wear lab-coat capes and wave soldering-iron wands. In Area-51, New Mexico's super-secret, federally-funded black science compound, and PS2's surest, sharpest shooter (Xbox's marksman-flush firing range is always another story), they conjure dragons behind closed doors. And mutants, and Illuminati, and little gray men, and bogus moon landings, and other sci-fi specters that go bump in the night of reason with gasp-worthy gloss.

Anybody who knows me knows I am a huge FPS fan so I came into this review with high expectations. For the most part Area 51 delivered a solid, fast, fun, and very challenging action-shooter, all set within a creative human-alien hybrid setting. Who wouldn’t love the chance to get a peek inside Area 51? The alien infection-mutation aspect gives the game just enough edge to keep it somewhat original in a sea of FPS titles, but in the overall scheme of things the Xbox version of Area 51 does pale slightly in comparison in the face of overwhelming competition. Still, there is no denying that this game is fun, with a great story and a totally professional presentation. Definitely worth adding to your collection no matter how many other FPS games you already have.

All in all Area 51 has around 15 hours of gameplay life squeezed into the DVD if you rush, but if you intend on learning the secrets that the collection of hangers hold you’ll probably need to double that amount. The storyline does take a while to heat up but once the plot grabs you only a few wouldn’t want to see out the story to its climax. With a little more polish Area 51 could have achieved so much more, but still, as it stands, it’s still an enjoyable experience for anyone with the slightest interest in the theme, and naturally of course, an itchy trigger finger.

Enter Midway Games. Their recently offered edgy FPS shooter titled simply "Area 51" delivers what many geeks have been dying to do - which is to get inside the fabled facility. It is so much more than merely an update to their own mid 1990's light-gun arcade shooter with the same name. You play as a Hazmat Specialist named Ethan Cole.

Area 51 doesn't reinvent the FPS wheel, but it doesn't try to, either. It sticks to the genre conventions that we know and love and concentrates on delivering one great firefight after another. With guns firing at full tilt, and mindless carnage taking center stage, Midway has a surefire hit on its hands. Whether you believe in aliens or not, no one can deny the pleasure that comes from blasting them off of our planet.

I found Area 51 to be an interesting, atmospheric, engaging and most importantly fun to play shooter despite being a little mindless at times. With some cool gun battles, charismatic characters (which does include Duchovney’s mono tone style, which you will either love or hate) and a gripping plot means that this game is bound to please fans of the genre, as long as you don’t go comparing it to that other game which we all know about! It’s hard to find many faults with this title other than some repetitive moments and “no brainer” sections; there are a number of games that try but fail to capture the imagination yet Area 51 does just that and I think is a worthy addition to any Xbox Library if you are a fan of FPS games. An above average title and well worthy of a rent before buy or even just go out and buy it anyway.

Ethan Cole is having one of those days. You know the ones that start off pretty bad and then get worse as the situation goes from dangerous to kill-everything-that-moves-if-you-want-to-survive. Area 51, Midway’s first-person shooter based on the arcade light-gun classic, places you in the mysterious military installation as you fight for your survival. This is also one of the most entertaining first-person shooters since the release of Half-Life on the PS2.

PlayStation 2IGN
In Midway's Area 51, David Duchovny portrays an ultra unlucky HAZMAT trooper, Ethan Cole, with slightly less emotional pizzazz than your average over-boiled carrot. To mar an otherwise polished and well presented title like Area 51 with such mallet-to-the-face drowsiness is downright inappropriate. It's a wrong that ranks right alongside topping crème brûlée with a handful of half-melted Skittles and a pinch of Reeses.
84
XboxXBox Solution (XBS)
While Area 51 makes it’s best effort to provide a great storyline, it only makes the mark about half way due to some of David’s lackluster performances. Putting that aside however, the gameplay is fantastic, it’s a solid, fast paced shooter that will give you your fix for shooting the hell out of some aliens. This is a first person shooter that is worth the time and money, and certainly worth a rental at a minimum for shooter fans.

Area 51 offers a solid FPS gameplay experience. While it doesn't do a lot that is new or unique, it does have a few features, like the duel wielding, and the mutation transformed mode. The production values, graphics, and especially the voice acting are extremely well done, and the game has non-stop action and never feels dull. The difficulty does seem to get a bit excessive, however, and you can expect to spend some time wandering around wondering what to do next from time to time.

Area 51 is also a fairly long game for its type and it should give even the most veteran FPS fans 12-15 hours of excitement. The cut-scenes alone are with the price of a theater’s admission and the rest of the game looks very impressive, backed by solid gameplay that is both challenging and down right fun even if simplistic in nature. Anyone who seems intrigued by the game’s premises or feels the urge for some arcade style shooter fun should definitely consider checking out Midway’s Area 51 as it is well worth a serious look. Those looking for an interesting and engrossing single-player campaign should have no trouble getting right into the game’s action.

XboxDigital Entertainment News (den)
The game will take FPS veterans 15 hours or less to go through. Shorter games are good, as they allow players to actually finish a game and feel a sense of accomplishment, especially for those that are just getting into the genre. While it does feel cramped, Area 51 is fun to play. The story is a bit convoluted with nearly every sci-fi conspiracy thrown in, and half of it could have been tossed out in favor of a sequel. No matter – Area 51 is worth picking up and playing.

Overall, this game is great for those who just want a good game to play. If you're a big fan of FPS this isn't anything you haven't already seen. I had a great time with the game and I would consider it a rental since its not very long, 15 hours at the most. Its graphics and presentation are appealing, along with its story.

As a gamer that practically grew up in the arcades, it's great to see arcade classics resurfacing on our favorite consoles with better graphics and different gameplay mechanics. Area 51 has come to the Xbox and while the arcade original required you to pick up an attached gun, this is no Xbox light gun game. That’s right, the classic has been reworked into a first-person shooter that takes us deep into the mystery that is the secret military installation where the only close encounter you’ll experience is of the dangerous kind. Grab a gun because these “little green men” mean business.

If you like FPS's then Area 51 is a game worth picking up as its a technical accomplishment on PS2. The game isn't not overly long, but it is entertaining and the multi-player is worth a shot for sure. This is one game I would certainly love to see a sequel to in the coming years.

Area 51 isn't only the name of a first person shooter but also the codename of a so-called secret American military base in the Nevada desert. A lot of conspiracy theories have been cooked up (The X-Files anyone?) and as long as the absolute truth doesn't come to the surface we'll be able to enjoy such entertainment. And lucky for us as what would we do without Sculder and Mully and the latest game, Area51, which speculates on the happenings that could have been going on in Roswell, New Mexico around 1947?

Area 51 may be a console port but it’s an impressive console port. While it’s not going to revolutionize the genre nor is it even a AAA title, it’s by no means a poor game and the ongoing action will really be music to the ears of FPS fans.

Area 51 does a really good job, both with its Roswell gimmick and as a standout first-person shooter. You'll enjoy both single- and multiplayer, the extras are great, and it's a little different than what you're used to. While there are problems--too cutscene-heavy, some lame objectives, and the fact that there are infinitely more zombies than little green men--Area 51 is more than enough to make a believer out of you.

PlayStation 2Video Game Talk
The graphics are great even though some of the designs could have used some sprucing up and aside from some poor voice acting and little music, the audio does it’s job well. Ultimately though there isn’t much to keep you coming back to this game and after you’ve beaten it, and only the multiplayer modes will hold your interest. Being the diehard FPS fan that I am, Area 51 stands out amidst the sea of mediocrity that plagues the genre. It does a lot of things right and is a great ride all the way through, it’s just not a ride worth visiting over and over again. Recommended

On the downside, though, you can't call Area 51 an original game by any means. I spotted similarities to Halo, Doom 3, and a spot of Resident Evil within the first twenty minutes of the game. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as Area 51 is a strong game, but it succeeds kind of in spite of itself. It would've been nice to see a lot more originality in the game, but Area 51 is a fun ride, regardless.

Overall Area 51 has to be on the best Sci-Fi first person shooters to date. Great graphics and gameplay and good soundtracks ñ basically everything you need for a good game. Midway have done a good job on this shooter and most definitely does not put the classic to shame.

Area 51’s tight and often exciting gameplay, thrilling shoot outs (thanks to some occasionally smart AI) mean it’s gonna be a fair old battle to get to the end, but if you’re a first person shooter veteran then at times you’ll feel like you’ve been here before, and maybe you should be having more fun along the way.

This game is truly an interesting combination of gaming elements. For those who are fans of the sci-fi genre and shows like the X-Files, you will find some serious humor within the confines of Area 51. Its clever, dry wit may be missed by those who fly through things, though, so play this game at a more leisurely pace to ensure that you don't miss anything. If Half-life and Serious Sam were combined, I have a feeling that Area 51 would be the result. The game is not for everybody, but given the bargain price and the decent sounds, graphics and storyline, it should be worth the pick up for even the casual gamer.

We've been hit with more than a few remakes of classic games in the past few years. NARC, Ninja Gaiden, Prince of Persia, and Conker: Live & Reloaded were all based in whole or in part on older games. Midway's Area 51 is the latest game franchise to be resurrected, this time as a first-person shooter instead of a light gun game.

Area 51 is one of those games that at first blush, seems like just another "me, too" first-person shooter. Replete with the requisite evil aliens, heavy weaponry and "click here" puzzles, it's a game that's easy to underestimate. After sinking a few hours into it though, you'll quickly find a hidden gem of a game, that while it might not be the best shooter around, it's still a good load of fun and worth checking out.

Area 51 does a commendable job of being a good-looking and action-packed first-person shooter. The action eventually grows repetitive as the game relies too heavily on overwhelming the player with endless droves of enemies rather than engaging you in genuinely well-executed gunfights. Even with solid art design on the environments and your enemies, along with intuitive controls, it's hard to shake the feeling that you've done it all before. And if you are looking for an engaging story about government conspiracies, the plot here never ventures past grounds that have been all too well-tread. Even so, if you enjoy first-person action games, Area 51 marks a solid entry that should keep you occupied if not wholly entertained for as long as it lasts.

With only a couple of things to unlock the only thing really keeping you coming back for more will be the multiplayer, which will only serve as a diversion from your other online games. The game is really good one time through, but to suffer through Duchovny?s trance inducing voiceover again sends a shiver down my spine. The action is solid though and plays out like Doom meets Half Life, but doesn?t do much to separate itself from the rest of the FPS pack.

Area 51, the codename of the secret military facility Dry Groom Lake in the Nevada desert, has been a mystery for several decades already and we still don't know anything about it.

Midway’s Area 51 is a competent first person shooter that contains great graphics and sound, but does not necessarily use it to its full potential. Once you complete the approximate eleven hour campaign, the game really doesn’t offer much to inspire players to do it all over again, one of the big disappointments overall.

Overall Area 51 is just another FPS, like I said graphically itdoesn't compare to Half-Life 2 or Doom 3 and as you go through you losesight of the storyline. If you're looking for another FPS just to playthrough I'd suggest getting this, but if you're looking for somethingmore original with more storyline I would pass this up. There is amultiplayer online mode on this game that I haven't played but I'veheard from few people that it's pretty good, I'd still ask aroundthough before picking this up.

It shouldn't take you more than a dozen or so hours to work your way through Area 51's single-player campaign, and the motivation for doing so will hinge entirely on how much you really get into the game's brand of action, as well as how much repetition of said action you're willing to put up with. In no way is the game devoid of fun, but FPS fans will often feel like they've experienced a lot of what Area 51 has to offer before, especially when it comes to the multiplayer. In the end, Area 51 turns in what amounts to the perfect rental for first-person shooter fans. It's a brief and infrequently enjoyable game that has some problems, but it does just enough right to make it worth a play...but probably not a purchase.

Equipped with a massive amount of human and alien weapons, you must explore chilling conspiracies such as the extraterrestrial crash at Roswell and the faked lunar landing, in order to solve the enigma of Area 51 before it is too late.

Rent this one before buying it, even if it means you have to rent the console version. The PC version is graphically superior but if you don't like it on one system, you won't like it on any.

If you buy Area 51 expecting a unique gaming experience then you will be sorely disappointed. It's terribly unoriginal with various moments taken from other games (sometimes done better). However, that's not to say Area 51 is a bad game - far from it. Fans of the genre will find plenty to enjoy, from the spooky setting to the non-stop action. Live users can also enjoy the excellent lag-free games that it offers, which certainly makes Area 51 a game to consider.

Uncover all of the government's darkest secrets in Midway's frenetic first person shooter Area 51. While this spirited update to the 1996 light gun classic isn't nearly as polished or intelligent as some of the other games in its genre, it still provides tons of hardcore alien blasting and some slick special effects. The controls are spot on, the creature designs are fantastic, and the voice acting is top notch. It may not keep you from playing Doom 3, but you won't be committing a mortal sin if it does.

Area 51's multiple online and multiplayer modes should give gamers a reason to keep playing it for quite some time. Whether or not Area 51 becomes the Halo Killer Sony so desperately wants remains to be seen.

There are essentially two stances a person can take when it comes to the existence of Area 51, a government run research facility thought to be brimming with alien life and technology (among other things): either it doesn't exist or it does, and anyone telling you otherwise has fallen prey to the government's mind control scheme thanks to drinking too much fluoride-enriched tap water.

Chances are, if you've ever been in a bowling alley, bar, or pizza parlor in your lifetime, you've encountered at least one Area 51 arcade machine. Originally debuting as a light gun-based shooter, the Area 51 series has been largely dormant for a number of years now. This is perhaps for a reason, considering the original game, let alone its follow-up sequels, wasn't really that great to begin with. Thankfully, Midway's latest version of Area 51 bears little resemblance to its predecessors. Now, Area 51 is a first-person shooter. The original game's titular setting has remained intact, as has its army of mutated villains. However, Midway has decided to inject some storyline into this version, as well as a smattering of Hollywood voice talent and a pretty-nice-looking graphics engine. Unfortunately, all this gussying up can't gloss over what's ultimately an average shooter that doesn't offer up more than a handful of satisfying thrills throughout its single-player and multiplayer modes.

With so many shooters out on the market these days, it’s hard to fully recommend Area 51 as a worthy purchase. Despite the lengthy campaign, it does get very repetitive and monotonous at times. It really doesn’t offer you anything you haven’t seen before in other shooters. On the multiplayer side of things, it can be quite fun at times but again it seems very average, like most everything else in the game.

This, in actuality, feels like a prettied-up port of some Nintendo 64 game that never came out. If nostalgia for the original arcade light-gun game, or fascination with the myth of the Mid-West has you by the cockles, then this game may give you a day or two's worth of good times. But anyone with a stricter criteria than that would be hard-pressed to find real satisfaction in what's offered here. Area 51 doesn't do a half-bad job with a moderately interesting premise, but in a genre loaded with heavy-hitters, you really need to pull out the big guns. Area 51 doesn't do that.

When all is said and done, what does Area 51 leave us with? It is a competent shooter with great mechanics, incredibly satisfying weapon feel and sound, a campaign that will last anywhere between 9 to 11 hours to complete, great visuals and excellent voice-acting. We are also left with a game that seems to have bitten off a little more than it could chew. Area 51 is a place of wonderment, wrought with exploration and wonderful sites. This game does not deliver on that premise at all. But if first person shooters are your thing, you could do a lot worse than Area 51. There are some truly memorable moments herein, but also the lingering feeling of wasted potential.

Lacking ideas, Area 51 plays up its license (and lessons learned from finer shooters) for a solid but unsurprising foray into the FPS field. Pity that it isn’t more.

Area 51 is a surprising update to a series with an appalling legacy, but it manages to drag the series' name from the mud and put it on the sidelines, in a crowd full of identical faces. It's the Topman of the games world, if you will - functional, occasionally exciting, generally boring, and the same as everything else. Even with the fun of shooting things, it should have and could have been so much better. A rental is recommended, or if it can be found in the holy ground that is the bargain bucket then by all means pick it up, but a £40 purchase is not suggested.

While the single-player game is the same old same old, multiplayer is a genuinely good time. Deathmatch maps don't offer the most compelling layouts but do a good job scaling level size in proportion to the number of participants, unlocking doors and expanding areas as more players log on. Multiple modes (DM, TDM, CTF, and infected, in which one contaminated mutant tries to spread his cooties), the game's Earth vs. E.T.s selection of guns and grenades, and perfectly placed power-ups offer variety and make fragging fun. Perhaps the biggest problem is finding enough people online to put together a populated match.

Once the effect of all the fancy environments wears off, you’ll quickly realize that there’s not much to this game other than pushing switches and shooting the same enemies over and over again. Even still, though the lack of very original gameplay ideas hurts Area 51, it does have a lot of good things going for it, including a very cool graphics engine and a cool infection mode, which, combined with a low price tag, do justify a purchase of this game. Just don’t expect all that much from it because this is a very superficial game.

In the end, Area 51 squats squarely in the middle of the pack in terms of quality. With the exception of a brief infatuation with "mutant mode" and a few set pieces involving squadmates, the gameplay is serviceable, but standard. There are certainly worse shooters out there, but there are also ones that go beyond the FPS-by-numbers approach and actually give you something unique, diverse, and fun. Area 51 might serve well as an introduction to the genre, especially if its themes resonate with a particular person's interests, but anyone who's played an FPS before won't find much to get overly excited about.

The game begins with an impressive pre-rendered sequence that introduces the player to the titular government facility, a nefarious mad scientist, and the man who will try to save the world: Ethan Cole. Ethan's a member of a crack HAZMAT team that's being sent into the depths of the facility to clean up, and he doesn't seem to be all that eager to face the terrors lurking in the darkness. Voiced by David Duchovny (of "X-Files" fame), Cole seems to be more of an academic than a fighter, although all that really matters is how well you control him. If he dies, it's all your fault.

WindowsActionTrip
All in all, Area 51 is a pretty standard first-person shooter with little if any original content, an unintelligible storyline, and game options typical for the genre, packed with some intense combat and an occasional feel you're actually onto something, while in fact you will only be browsing levels in search for bigger, badder, and meaner opponents. Add to this the fact the game is not that long, and that it doesn't have a great replay value, courtesy of the mediocre multiplayer facet.

But the bulk of the game takes itself far too seriously, so we are forced to admit that it falls short of other serious shooters. Despite some decent multiplayer and a few neat features, Area 51 is a much less intriguing game than military facility. We wish it were a little more out of this world.

The final bit worth noting is that, after a lackluster release, the PC version was released for free in the United States. This was apparently supposed to be a limited-time promotion, but it’s still available. The free version is also supposed to be supported with ads for the U.S. Air Force (which is confusing, as the game doesn’t present the Air Force in the most flattering light), but I didn’t see a single ad of any stripe. If you like your freeware legal, this is the rare professional FPS that fits the bill. It’s also not the total Half-Life clone you might have heard it was, but I still hesitate to recommend it (even at the free price). It will kill time, but you won’t remember much of the experience.

XboxBordersdown
In essence Area 51 is a series of well-executed set pieces, meaning it could be argued that Midway intended the "all killer, no filler" approach which clearly couldn’t be sustained for a longer period of time. While not the worst example of its genre, Area 51 is only a must-play title for those obsessed with alien conspiracies, or those still hungry for more first-person horror after overturning the forces of Hell in Doom 3. For everyone else, the scariest thing about this game will be how quickly the credits roll, making it one title to be bought and thoroughly enjoyed essentially only on budget or rental.
