If you were the kind of kid that enjoyed melting your plastic army men or setting them up for combat in the car, kitchen, or bathtub, then you'll get a chance to relive your childhood with Sarge's Heroes--except now you get to see them blasted into millions of plastic pieces or crumple into a melted mess. Even better.

It's stealth, but not as we know it... more like a good old-fashioned arcade style shooting romp with a little strategic movement required to succeed. If you enjoyed the first army bash then check this out. If not, then I advise you to pick up the original title because overall it is a much better game.

Nintendo 64Gamer's Pulse
In conclusion, I would recommend this as a rentable game, perhaps providing a few hours of enjoyment for you and your buddies. After that, you will return it and forget its very existence. But, for all you hardcore Army Men plastic figurine old-timers, let yourself loose and be mean to some green!

The latest facet in 3DO's ongoing Army Men series and the first of the games to appear on the Dreamcast is Army Men: Sarge's Heroes, a solid Dreamcast revamp of the loathsome PlayStation original. Containing 16 missions and nearly 40 levels of toy soldier combat, you will be called upon to rescue your platoon, save General Griff's daughter, destroy the tan army's portals, and prevent the destructions of your own green army base. While the base plot remains the same, the Dreamcast version of Army Men Sarge's Heroes ships out with improved visuals, crisp game-engine cinematics, and tweaked gameplay.

This is a classic example of an "it's ok" game. You know, where your buddy asks "how was the game?" and you reply, "well, it's ok." The levels are generally well thought out and the good Sniper mode is off-set by the frustrations with the poor camera implementation and a lack of save points. There is however an interesting foundation in place and if it can be built upon well then game players will look forward to each new release. Give it a rent to see if you like it.

Nintendo 64Digital Press - Classic Video Games
While the game does provide a few laughs, it still fails to bring back memories of frying, crushing, blowing up, slaughtering, and ripping limbs off of the little green plastic guys. The missions inside the house show a change in the series, one that is desperately needed from the already stale series. But please 3DO, no more sequels unless you really play around with the formula!

DreamcastGaming Target
If you actually want a mediocre game that you'll quickly tire of, then by all means, run out and snap up this one. On the other hand, if you value quality, gameplay, and in a purely cosmetic sense, graphics, you'll want to chuck this onto the road and take a miniature plastic flamethrower to it.

So, why the heck is this mediocre game coming out on the Dreamcast? Some will say that it is the video game company's fault for releasing an boring game. Others might state that development team who performed the translation should of added new extra to the Dreamcast version. Well, the answer is simple folks... most gamers out there are content with mediocrity. We raise our voices, crying why this awesome game didn't sell as well as this third rate game. But so long as there is a good percentage of gamers that settle of mediocre titles, companies will continue giving the people games like Army Men: Sarge's Heroes, a game that should not even be seen in the Dreamcast line-up.

Nintendo 64GameSpot
The first game in 3DO's Army Men series for the console systems, Army Men 3D for the PlayStation, lacked a great deal of spit and polish but had enough going deep down to make you hope for a sequel, albeit one that was much improved. The sequel, Army Men: Sarge's Heroes, has now arrived for the Nintendo 64, but not much, if anything, has been improved upon, and it contains a whole new batch of problems.

Army Men Sarge's Heroes is een waardeloze titel die zelfs de meest hardcore plastic soldatenfreak niet lang zal kunnen boeien. Een van de zwaktste uit de reeks.

I really have had enough, 3DO obviously doesn't recognize the PS' true power and are being extremely negligent about it. I'm stressing this issue because, 3DO has yet again failed to deliver what could have at least been an "OK" game. Army Men: Sarge's Heroes was first released on the N64, it didn't stir up anything besides bad ratings. Now the game has landed on the PS and it's stirring up even more atrocious comments and we are making one of them.

You will discover your own body to be your worst enemy on this mission. Your control over your own limbs will be sluggish and unwieldy. You will find it nearly impossible to turn to face the enemy. You will get frustrated as you get shot time after time because you can't tell how far you've turned, and then you cant see in front of you because the camera hasn't moved yet. Even the simplest tasks, like leaving a building through the door will prove difficult.

That's the situation in a nutshell, gentlemen. Which one of you is man enough for the task? I notice that you're no longer smiling, Sarge. I'm looking for a soldier with character and true grit; a soldier that is not afraid to give 150% for the Green Army. This mission will test your loyalty and …. Aw hell, screw it. I'm going AWOL. Let's get the hell outta' here. Who's with me? Sarge? I'll buy the first round of beer....

I don't think I ever truly knew the definition of heinous until I attempted Sarge's split screen model, which is a pointless mess. 3DO's first Army Men game (Playstation, 1997) was decent, but once they started pumping out cannon fodder like Sarge's Heroes, the series quickly degenerated into joke material.
