Army Men

Overall, this is a good "beer and pretzels" type game that easily engrosses the player. Army Men is a good investment, both for those who want to relive a bit of their childhood, and/or those who are looking for something a little less taxing than Starcraft or Rebellion.

None of the problems with Army Men is enough to ruin the experience. It is a fun game that is very addictive, and has enough action and humor to satisfy. It's just different enough so that it doesn't look like a copy of anything else, and it never takes itself too seriously. If you played with toy soldiers as a kid, this will bring them to life for you again in a very endearing manner. Bottom Line: Excellent graphics, addictive gameplay, and lots of fun. Just different enough to set it apart from the pack. Promises to bring back some fond memories. You can't save your game during a mission, and the AI could have been better, especially ally troops.

Deze oorlogssimulatie is zeker geslaagd, al was het maar door de zeer originele invalshoek, waardoor de fanaten en andere grote kinderen vele uren spelplezier zullen beleven.

Army Men is geen slecht spel maar toch denk ik dat er veel meer in had gezeten dan er nu uitgehaald is. Jammer, want Army Men is verder zonder meer een vermakelijke game.

Может быть это из-за ностальгии по Airborne Ranger и Cannon Fodder, может из-за того, что в детстве я недоиграл в солдатиков :))) А может потому, что игра хорошая. Не супер, не хит, но просто хорошая. Проходить миссии приятно, хочется посмотреть, чем закончится весь этот конфликт ненастоящих генералов... А может просто иногда прикольно посмотреть, как из взорванного банка твои друзья выгребают ценности... В общем, если даже вы не прониклись духом “игры в песочнице”, то взгляните хоть глазком на новое 3DO-шное творение. Вдруг понравится... ВЕДЬ НАДО ПОБЕЖДАТЬ!

Lassen Sie sich vom Spielzeug-Look der kleinen Plastik-Kerle nicht täuschen: Army Men ist alles andere als kinderleicht. In den letzten Missionen habe ich mir auch beim x-ten Anlauf noch die Zähne ausgebissen. Wenn Sarge, nur mit einem MG bewaffnet, drei Panzern gegenüberstehe, sind die Chancen reichlich ungleich verteilt. Trotzdem macht Army Men einen Heidenspaß: Die abwechslungsreichen, spannenden Aufträge, die Mischung aus Ballern und taktischen Vorgehen und das ungewöhnliche Modellbau-Flair begeistern mich Schlacht für Schlacht aufs Neue.

Army Men zeigt in vielen Bereichen sehr gute Ideen. Das Spiel selbst hätte ein enormes Potential, aber die Umsetzung ist etwas mißglückt. Grafik und Sound kommen über den Mindeststandard nicht hinaus, und die angesprochenen Kritikpunkte zeigen, daß Army Men noch nicht reif für den Markt ist. Eigentlich schade, denn es kommt durchaus gehobener Spielspaß auf, allerdings nur so lange, bis wieder eine unfaire Szene alle Bemühungen zerstört.

Wer gerne lange an schwierigen Stellen herumprobiert, wird sich bei Army Men mit Wonne in den Schlamm werfen. Leider fehlt eine Zwischen-Speichermöglichkeit während der laufenden Einsätze, wodurch dieses Programm für Choleriker völlig ungeeignet ist.

If Army Men fails anywhere, it is in its effort to conjure a world reminiscent of those little green plastic guys. Yes, when soldiers are shot they fly apart in an explosion of parts (with no blood); and yes, when tanks flips over they look vaguely like toys. But only vaguely�if you didn't know that the game was supposed to be about miniatures, you could easily think it was about real soldiers. Not a big problem, obviously, especially since the gameplay is so accessible and satisfying. Army Men is so easy and fun that, yes, even a grown-up can play it.

While the plastic soldier theme might have been better served if it had played up the Toy Story angle a bit more, the end result is fun nonetheless.

Whether you choose to make do with your trusty rifle, move up to the destructive bazooka, or play a game of catch with grenades, the game's seven unique armaments make blowing up plastic soldiers almost as fun as when you were a kid. Though Sarge's sluggish response takes time to get used to, the airtight control found in the weapons system redeems this minor flaw. While it can be murder to adjust to a proper angle for targeting an enemy, shots leap out of the muzzle with a tap of the A button and strike their mark with satisfying accuracy. Additionally, switching between weapons is as easy as tapping the B button, providing instant access to whatever devastation you choose to unleash. If you were ever a fan of run and shoot games like Ikari Warriors or Commando, the gameplay is going to seem comfortably familiar. In addition to that, the story is entertaining as well.

Army Men seems to have taken several turns for the schizophrenic in its development -- it’s got action, strategy, single-player and squad level aspects, but instead of breaking new ground, it borrows heavily from other types of games without ever clearly defining itself. It was fun enough to play through it once, but after trying to get excited for a second time around, I just found that I didn’t look forward to playing. Overall, Army Men rates a 68 for a decent idea that just failed to measure up with everything else on the market.

Das Gute gleich vorweg: Die Missionen sind vielfältig aufgebaut, die Ausrüstung der Plastik-Söldner ist schön umfangreich, und die über 30 Levels sollten erstmal ausreichen. Der Grafik hätte aber etwas plastische Chirurgie nicht geschadet, und vor allem die hakelige Steuerung kostet Army Men einige Wertungsprozente. Auch Künstliche Intelligenz und Kollisionsabfrage sind gruselig, was in Actionspielen heutzutage einfach nicht mehr passieren darf. Im unterhaltsamen Mehrspieler-Modus fallen diese Mankos aber nicht so stark ins Gewicht.

Det verkar som om 3DO fått idétorka i samband med utvecklingen av Army Men. Grundtanken var helt enkelt perfekt, men allt förstörs av ett tråkigt spel. Det är skamligt att förstöra en härlig nostalgitripp på det här viset. Army Men är kul de första fem uppdragen, sedan blir spelandet enformigt. Det som håller spelet vid liv är multiplay, där spelarna kan tävla i vanlig deathmatch eller capture the flag. 3DO har lyckats göra en dålig kopia av klassikern Cannon Fodder. En god idé som förstörs av tarvlig spelkänsla.

Savner du dine små plasticsoldater, og ængrer du dig stadigvæk over, at din ynglingskampvogn blev spist af naboens hund, så bør du helt klart prøve Army Men. Men spillet er forholdsvist simpelt, og hvis man er til de store, strategiske spil, skal man nok holde sig væk.

As you might be aware from reading my previews and my Strategic Advantage column, Army Men went through some plastic surgery (pun intended) a couple of months ago. Instead of a real-time strategy (RTS) game with some elements of action, it really became an action game with some elements of strategy. Having played virtually every RTS game that has come out in the last year and a half, I caution strategy gamers who may have misconceptions about this title. Both Editor in Chief Emil Pagliarulo and I agree that this game reminds us of the old coin-operated arcade games, like Commando and Heavy Barrel, where you see the action from a top-down or isometric view and move about blowing things up and picking up special weapons. Certainly Army Men is leaps and bounds beyond these games in terms of what it offers, but the roots are almost unmistakable.

Bouh ! le vilain jeu ! La jouabilité détestable et la technique décevante relèguent cet Army Men au rang de figurant dans les rayons des revendeurs de jeux vidéo. Passez votre chemin.

Plastic toy soldiers make the move to the PC screen... but is it worth the effort?

In the game industry, this kind of a game event doesn't occur very often. In this era of light sourcing and 3D acceleration, it's rare that we see a game with a story that is much better than the graphics.

Army Men bygger på ett koncept som borde fungera bra på Game Boy eftersom huvudrollsinnehavarna är små plastiga leksakssoldater. Men tyvärr har utvecklarna 3DO slarvat för mycket med kontrollen, som är grundläggande i spelets uppdrag.
