Pocket Books were planning a trilogy of novels based on the game. UbiSoft was then approached by descendants of the original Assassins, an Ismaeli sect whose mystic secret society in the past killed members of the Abbasid and Seljuq élite for political and religious reasons, who urged them to show more respect for their ancestors. Trying to be politically correct, they agreed to remove all religious references, then hired an expert to vet the book, and also agreed to send the book to the current sect's leader Agha Khan in India for any suggestions. The publisher felt this was too much interference and had damaged the novels so much that they ended up cancelling them.
