Graphically, there isn't much to look at with only a few colors used for the mountains and guns, which are terribly drawn. A few squares in the shape of a cannon would have been an improvement. The Atari 2600 is certainly capable of looking better! And the sound isn't much better, consisting of three basic sounds: the gunshot, the explosion, and the marching of soldiers. Overall, Artillery Duel moves so slow that most gamers will have trouble concentrating for more than a few minutes.
Artillery Duel is one of those games where you adjust a cannon for power and angle and attempt to blow the hell out of another cannon that is usually situated across the screen. I usually like these kind of games but Artillery Duel did nothing for me. You cannot actually see the angle of your cannon, making it difficult to angle the weapon correctly. The graphics are big and blocky and boring and you have to sit through an unnecessary attract screen just to get to the game. There are far better examples of this particular subgenre of shooter out there.
Sure it's a challenge, but there's no payoff. I remember typing in games like this on my old Atari computer in the early 80's. There's just not enough game here.
