Programmed by the always-dependable David Crane (Pitfall!, Fishing Derby, Dragster), Freeway is an audiovisual delight. Setting the brightly-coloured vehicles against the grey highway makes the colours really pop, and the traffic sounds are surprisingly realistic. Analyzing the vehicle patterns to determine the fastest and safest way to cross the road is the true pleasure of this game. If I have one complaint, though, it’s that once you master those patterns the game doesn’t have much more to offer. However, Freeway offers plenty of challenge up to that point to keep you busy.
All in all, this isn't a bad game, but it does seem very unnecessary when the superior Frogger is available. Frogger is one of the better games available for the 2600, and it isn't exactly hard to find, either. Still, this is a pretty good two-player game featuring good graphics and a good amount of challenge. If you can find it for a decent price, grab it. Otherwise, just stick with Frogger and you probably won't feel too bad about not having a copy of Freeway.
What then is my conclusion? This game has excellent aesthetics for its time, and it has a gameplay that is entertaining in short bursts periodically. My recommendation is this: if you can find this game cheap, buy it. But I'd hesitate to recommend paying more than about $3 for it, both because it's very common and because you won't get your money's worth out of it at much more than that.
While the chicken looks a bit sickly, the graphics are otherwise crisp and clear, and the constant din of engines and horns sounds realistic. Though lacking a variety of obstacles, Freeway is enjoyable, especially in two-player mode, yet it is not as versatile as Frogger since the chicken cannot move horizontally or jump.
Nein?
The graphics look terrific and the vehicles are varied, colorful, and detailed. Unlike Frogger, you can only move your chicken up and down. This is quite a bit of fun with two players playing at once.
