This is proof positive that soccer games can be fun. Emlyn succeeds at the not inconsiderable task of being fun to play as both a management sim and a dash-about arcade game. Because you can control both aspects of the game, you develop a real affinity with all the members of your team. It can be quite a traumatic experience when you have to take old Swonnicker out of goal because he's died, or something equally sad. Involving, excellent fun.
All in all, football fans looking for an accurate arcadey football game could do a lot worse. Emlyn is absolutely brilliant - there's no mistake about it. It just falls short of the ZERO HERO because of the little niggles, but don't let that dissuade you from buying it. As a 'proper' game of footie, it's probably the best around.
The amount of options is fantastic and the number of kicks at hand unrivalled. It takes an age to become accustomed to the different directions and heights of kicks, and longer still to master them. But patience has its rewards - the amount of control you can have over the ball is brilliant.
The gameplay - crosses from corners, one-twos from free kicks - can be altered by using a series of pre-defined plays. Control is good, but the excitement is dissipated because of the sluggish pace. And there isn't even a single Question of Sport-type pullover in sight! Bah!
The management section is okay, but it doesn't add a hell of a lot to what is already a fairly weak game. Manchester Utd
provided the same features with much more style, but if you just want to play straight soccer Kick Off 2
is the definitive game (and it's five quid cheaper).
